“I would own at Survivor.” I say mindlessly as the TV show flicks across the screen. Niall smirks as he keeps channel surfing, resting his head on my shoulder.
“You’re kidding right?” He laughs. “You’d quit after one day due to lack of blankets.”
I shove him and steal the blanket we are sharing now, seeing as we are still in the bed in the hotel.
“Probably true.” I nod, taking the remote off him and changing it to SpongeBob.
“This is the first show we watched together!” Niall exclaims, passing me the nachos we ordered from room service. “And I made nachos that night too.”
I kiss his neck lightly, taking some of the nachos. “I still question why SpongeBob is on TV at 2am in the morning, but I’m not going to complain.” I shrug, taking out my phone for the first time since we got into the room.
Seventeen missed calls from Tony. Shit.
I feel a little bad that I had left the dance without saying goodbye. In fact I had completely forgotten about that, since we were a little – preoccupied. Sighing, I quickly dialled Tony’s number.
Someone picks up after only one ring.
“Elli!”
It’s Taylor who answers
“Oh thank God, why the hell haven’t you been answering your phone! I mean I know you were too busy having sex but c’mon, I’m your best friend and this is extremely important! Jesus Christ Elli I don’t even know where to begin-”
“Taylor!” I yell into the phone, a little panicky because Taylor sounds frantic and out of breath. Niall shoots me a look that I can’t quite decipher before he too reaches for his own phone. He holds it up and shows me, he’s missed about fifty calls, all from different numbers. I watch as he stands up and throws on a pair of jeans before wandering over to the balcony outside, looking worried as he calls someone.
“Taylor I’m sorry, my phone was on silent.” I reason with him, wondering why Niall looked so concerned. “What’s wrong? Why do you sound like you’re in the middle of a marathon? And why are you calling me off Tony’s phone?”
I hear Taylor struggling to cope on the other end of the line, and suddenly all the worry that Niall took away has come flooding back. That awful feeling I felt when I saw a man bent over Lucy’s flowers has come back, stronger than before.
“I lost my phone at the dance…Elli, okay promise me you won’t freak out okay? But – oh my God I don’t even know how to say this, I’m fucking scared right now-”
“Taylor please just make some sense!” I cry into the phone, throwing on one of Niall’s shirts over my underwear and sitting on the couch just in front of the balcony. I catch a glimpse of Niall on the balcony. He has his back to me, but he is frozen still.
“Okay, I’m just going to say it.” Taylor takes a deep breathe into the phone and whimpers a little. “After all the lights went out at the formal, people started panicking a little. The teachers couldn’t get them back on for a good ten minutes, it was like chaos. And then all of a sudden there was this guy behind me, I don’t know who he was but he said his name was Charlie and-”
I stop listening to Taylor for a second.
Charlie...
“He said his name was Charlie and he was asking me where you were Elli. He kept on screaming ‘Where is Elli! I need her!’ I was so fucking scared, I didn’t tell him anything, I wasn’t even sure where you had gone anyway! This Charlie guy, he was like in his thirties or something. He started pushing me, but Tony pulled me away as fast as he could...Elli I’m sorry, it was so dark I couldn’t see anything so I can’t tell you what he looked like, but I’m sure he’s just some crazy paparazzi guy or something...Elli? Elli are you there?”
I can hear Taylor, but I’ve started to zone out. My mind begins to cloud over and things stop making sense.
His name is Charlie. The man that Lucy keeps running into at the shops is also called Charlie. I can’t think of any reasonable explanation that can decipher them as two different people. All I can conclude from this is that there is a man named Charlie, and he is trying to find...me.
Who seemingly fits the build of a man who had killed my family back in Australia...
I drop my phone and freeze, feeling like the world is passing by in slow motion. I can’t feel anything, I can’t even look at Niall who has rushed back inside looking worse for wear. I’m not crying, I’m not even looking scared. I’m just paralysed.
“Elli? Elli you need to listen to me.”
I can hear Niall speaking but it is as though his words are clouded with a thick layer of fog and I can’t understand him. I’ve started shaking, and now I can’t stop.
“He found me.” I hear myself mumble silently. My breathing is a little jagged, I feel like I’m going to be sick. “I thought...I thought he had given up...”
“This is my fucking fault.” I hear Niall repeat to himself over and over. That’s when I look up, capturing his eye. He looks like he’s about to cry.
“If I hadn’t...you were meant to be hidden, but I put you in the spotlight. Why didn’t I think about that, I’m so fucking stupid-”
“This is not your fault.” I exclaim, standing up and placing my hands to my temple. “This is just some fucked up guy...don’t you dare say this is your fault.”
The two of us stand there for a moment, contemplating what has just happened. Then a thought hits me.
“How did you know? What happened, who were you just on the phone to?” I ask, bombarding him with questions. He purses his lips and then strides off towards our bags, packing everything up.
“We have to go.” He insists, frantically throwing everything away. I march up to him and kick the bag away, which hurt a little bit.
“No. Not until you tell me who you were on the phone to.” I exclaim, looking a lot more confident than I felt. I see him exhale deeply, not meeting my eye.
“That was Paul...one of our security. He and some others were watching the hotel and...one of the guys, Damien, he’s been stabbed. This guy came up behind him, started saying that he needed to see you…when Damien said no, he pulled out a knife. He’s going to be okay, he’s a big guy.”
I hear my breath come out in a whimper and I feel myself sinking to my knees. I let my head hang low, my hands entangled in my long hair.
“You have to go.” I mumble, dragging his bag back over and throwing his things inside hastily. “You need to get out of here, now. He could be in the hotel right now, just go.”
Niall stares at me with wide eyes, like I am insane. I could be, I really don’t know at this point.
“You seriously think I would leave without you?” He shakes his head and gets onto the ground next to me, wrapping his arms around me.
“It’s going to be okay. They’ve called the police on this guy, they’re going to catch him. Everything’s going to be fine.”
I want to believe him, I really do. But it is at that point a loud banging comes from outside our door, and I feel myself slipping away again.
