It’s strange how much things can change within such a short space of time. Only a couple of months ago I was feeling more alone than ever. Nobody knew who I was, and I thought my life was over before it had even started.
Now, I can’t even comprehend feeling that way.
I had been at Niall’s house every night this week, doing the most stupid things. We had spent the whole of last night playing monopoly, because that game doesn’t ever end. I had learnt more about him than I have ever learnt about another person, and it felt so weird being that close with somebody, that we were almost one person.
Truth be told, his mother, Maura, did fly over to meet me. After our phone conversation, she was dying to get a glimpse of ‘the girl who made her son so happy’ and she had booked tickets to fly over the next day. I spent the day with her, something Niall was a little concerned about.
“Don’t believe a word she says about me.” He had pleaded with me, but I laughed and told him that I definitely would believe her.
I really did think that meeting his mum would be awkward, but it was surprisingly nice. We got lunch together at a local café in the middle of London, getting lost on the way since neither of us really knew our way around the city. And I think I know why I had so much fun – it was the way she asked me about how school was going, or the comments she made about me needing to eat more. She was treating me like I was her daughter. And I haven’t had a motherly figure like that in my life for quite some time now.
And I didn’t feel uncomfortable telling her about my parents, and what had happened in Australia. She had wrapped an arm around me and told me ‘Sometimes life throws things at us that we can never even begin to understand; we just have to deal with them in the best way we can.’
That really stuck with me, as though she knew exactly how I had been feeling the past two months.
When my grandad came to pick me up from having lunch with her, there was a bit of an awkward situation, which I can’t stop replaying over in my head. I had left my jumper in the café so I went back inside to retrieve it, and when I came back out I heard the two of them talking.
“So Jerry, you realize these kids have been spending a lot of time together right?” She had asked, thinking I was out of earshot. I saw my grandad nod his head, saying ‘Ah yes, reminds me of my teenage days.’
I shook my head at that laughing, trying hard to listen to this next part.
“Well she’s adorable, I can see that much, does it worry you how much time they’ve been alone together…at his house?”
Oh God.
“Worried? Elli’s a good girl, and Niall seems like a good kid so I don’t think there’s any call for worry.”
Ah, my sweet naïve grandad, still completely baffled as to what Maura was talking about.
She had cleared her throat then. “Well I mean they are teenagers, they’re bound to be having-”
“Let’s get going then!” I had come out of hiding and yelled out that point, flustered and rushing to pull my grandad away, who still looked a little confused.
In all honesty, Niall and I haven’t actually done that yet. We haven’t really done anything beyond a bit of heavy making out. It’s not that I don’t want to, it’s definitely not that…but we haven’t really discussed it yet. Everybody thinks we are anyway. All the fans message him on Twitter about it every single day, even right now.
I’m in philosophy when my phone vibrates, with Taylor stealing my phone before I can get to it. We’ve become close now, Taylor and I, and he’s one of the only people I can really talk to about Niall.
