BEATRIX
Not a Hero—
I stood there dumbfounded as if a bolt of lightning had struck me, watching Cade as he fell to the ground. The bombings had stopped at the destruction of the jets but the gunshots were still there as the people who supported this wretched cause fought the police force.
Unmanned vehicles—their engines still on—blocked the street, their windshields and headlights shattered. There were dead bodies, too. Blood stained the concrete. Buildings burned and dark pillars of smoke rose up to the sky.
Women, men, and children wept.
Masama 'to.
Many enforcement arrived on the streets. The terrorists fell back as the police started to pour from every corner of the street, overwhelming their forces. Some tried to hide but were too slow for the police's bullets. Some still fought, yelling at the top of their lungs.
Ito na ang pagkakataon ko.
I sprang to my feet and bolted toward Cade when a dark van appeared from the left street of the intersection. The vehicle was different from the police's. There was a logo on its side—a large triangle overlapping a smaller hexagon. I had never seen that logo before. Not from any hospitals.
The van stopped near where Cade collapsed and men wearing an unusual paramedic uniform I had never seen from any hospital before came out behind the van, a hovering stretcher following behind. One of the men carried Cade and placed him on the stretcher.
"Cade!"
I broke into a sprint. The gunshots and yells drowned my voice. I wouldn't reach him in time.
The men hurried back to the van with Cade in tow.
