Turns out that's exactly what the Azure Messenger wanted. He/She wanted the Agency to fail in saving those men at the hospital so the agency could be framed for their deaths. It was all part of the Azure Messenger's plan to get back at the Armed Detective Agency for killing the Azure King three years ago. And I somehow got roped into being a part of this whole mess.
Now I'm stuck working at the bakery on what is supposed to be my off day. But the boss was pretty mad at me for running out on him yesterday without notice... so here I am. Atsushi is here keeping me company because he feels bad about it. Kunikida is here too, but not for me. He just wanted a quiet place to work on the case. I hear the jingle of our bell on the door and turn to greet our newest customer- that is, until I see who it is.
"No. Not today Dazai. I'm busy," I say bluntly.
"Now is that any way to treat two paying customers?" Dazai asks with that annoyingly cheeky smile of his. That's when I realize the girl we saved yesterday is with him.
"Oh, alright," I give in reluctantly, "follow me." I sit them in a booth by the window and take their orders. Once they're seated, I can't help but ask, "So are you guys on a date or..."
Sasaki, I think is her name, begins to blush. Looking a little too proud of himself, Dazai answers, "Oh no, nothing like that. I just didn't have any food back at my place, and since she spent the night there, I figured I should get her something to eat."
I literally choke on air. Atsushi and Kunikida lose their shit, taking the words right out of my mouth:
"SHE WHAT???" Kunikida yells at Dazai, grabbing him roughly by the collar.
"Is that even allowed?" Atsushi mumbles.
I was thinking the same thing, Atsushi...
Dazai lets us all simmer in our flabbergasted states for a little while before clearing things up. He explains that they slept in separate bedrooms and that he didn't even lay a finger on her. "I knew you misunderstood, but I thought it was funny so I didn't correct you," he adds with that fake innocent smile. I can't help but giggle at them as I work behind the counter. Kunikida and Dazai are a very energetic pair, to say the least.
'How do two such different people end up working together?' I wonder.
When they all finally start heading out, Dazai hangs back for a second.
"So, what did you think of her?" he asks, leaning on the counter in front of me.
"Um, she's nice I guess?" I say, confused, "But, no offense, I don't think it's going to work out between the two of you..."
Dazai shakes his head with a chuckle, "No, I meant, do you think she's hiding something?" Then, fully realizing what I had said, he adds, "And also, ouch! What's that supposed to mean?" Crossing his arms and pushing out his bottom lip, Dazai begins to pout indignantly.
"Ohhh," I laugh, avoiding his last statement, "Sorry." I look at Sasaki standing outside the bakery window. She is talking to Atsushi and Kunikida. Nothing seems abnormal on the outside. I focus all my heightened senses on her. I listen to her heartbeat- it's steady. Her breathing moves in and out of her lungs without a hitch. Her hands shake ever so slightly at her sides. I feel...bloodlust. There's definitely something dark hiding in the back of her mind. My face goes serious as I turn back to Dazai, "Yes. Yes, she is."
With that, Dazai gets up and begins to leave. Stopping in the doorway, he turns back to me asking, "By the way, when do you get off?"
I check the time. ~it's 3:50 pm~ "Um, in about an hour, why?"
