sorry for the incredibly graphic last chapter. we'll dulge into more romance :))
..maybeAfter eventually convincing Tammy that I wasn't the reason that Kenny ended things between them, she hugged me and left, but refused to look me in the eye the entire time. I could tell that she was embarrassed. But almost immediately after she left, Kenny went tumbling.
He looked at me and his blue eyes seemed glossy. I took a step towards him and reached my arms out with concern.
"Kenny, are you okay?"
He opened his mouth to speak but, instead, he stumbled forward. I ran up to catch him before he hit the ground and shouted with pure panic in my voice, "Clyde! Call an ambulance, he's becoming unconscious!"
I tried my hardest to look for his pulse on his neck, but I couldn't feel it. "Clyde, goddamnit, fucking call someone!"
Clyde stumbled backwards. Fear was ridden on his face as he scrambled to find his phone.
"Hello? Yes, my friend just passed out-"
"I can't find his pulse!" I screeched out, wrapped my arms around Kenny.
"Please, just hurry!"
Clyde was still talking to the dispatcher about Kenny's state but I wasn't listening. Everything blurred. I couldn't care less. I was just focused on how beautiful yet tired he looked. I was sitting on the ground now, tears streaming down my face with his head in my lap. His soft, golden hair tickled my skin. I gently drug my nails from down his jawline to his neck, then back up again. His skin was still warm. I'm not sure how long I sat there, but before I could process it, hands grabbed for Kenny's limp body. Unfamiliar hands, covered in blue gloves. I looked up and made eye contact with a paramedic.
"Do you want to ride with him? I'm sure he'd appreciate the support," one of them asked, holding a hand out to me. I nodded and took her hand as they rolled out the stretcher that Kenny was on. I stumbled out, following them. They helped me into the ambulance shortly after they escorted Kenny inside. I sat down and took in the smell of the ambulance. Despite the high speed that they were driving, time seemed to slow down as the lady placed a mask over Kenny's mouth to help him breathe. I inhaled shakily as I realized we've swapped places. I couldn't help but think back to the accident we'd endured together. And the way that he insisted on joining me inside of my own ambulance to ensure my well-being. Those seemed to be simpler times, despite the tragedy. Where I knew my clear feelings for Kenneth McCormick. When Tammy wasn't in the picture. And maybe now I still felt the same, even after all of these years. And maybe he did too.
That made me smile. I reached for his hand and the second we made contact I could feel something erupt from within me. A feeling I never would've shared with Clyde. It was electric. And it made my cheeks grow red. His fingers were rough and calloused but warm.
The woman who accompanied us put a reassuring hand on my shoulder, "Your boyfriend is stable. He'll be alright,"
I nodded and smiled. Even though I knew I should've interjected her choice of words, I liked the way it sounded when it rolled off of her tongue. It just sounded correct. Proper. Meant to be, if you will.
Before I knew it, we were at the hospital and Kenny was being wheeled into the doors. I wasn't allowed into the room past this point, but they had gave me permission to wait outside for him to wake up. Wait I awaited his awakening, I pulled my phone and dialed Clyde's number.
Ring.
Ring.
Ring.
"Hey baby what's up?"
Before I answered, I could hear something weird going on in the background. And his voice seemed high and shaky. It took me a moment before I realized I was hearing moans. My face flushed and the grip on my phone tightened. For the first time in years, it broke my heart to catch Clyde cheating on me. It was difficult to keep myself from thinking that Kenny would never cheat on me.
"I think we should break up,"
"What? Babe, I've already bought you a ring and everything! You can't leave me, we have a future together!"
"You did not buy me a ring, Clyde," I rolled my eyes and sunk into my chair.
"..I was going to!"
"Bye, Clyde. I'll pick my things up soon,"
Beep.
"Ma'am, Mr. McCormick is awake. He said he would like to see you now, but he is a bit woozy,"
"That's alright, thank you," I stood, clutching my phone tightly and swiftly walking into the room. Upon entering, Kenny's face lit up and he smiled wide.
"(Y/n)! Thank God you're here, I have to talk to you," he patted his hand against his blanket as if offering me to sit next to him. I moved from my awkward position in the doorway and over to where he requested. I planted my hands onto the bed and he swept his hands under my own. My stomach erupted with butterflies as he held my hands in his and rubbed his thumb other the back of my hand. I stared at his fingers for a while.
"Please look at me, (Y/n),"
I lifted my head up slightly and made contact with piercing blue eyes. They were foggy but they made me smile. "Yes, McCormick?"
"I think I should tell you something really important," he took a hand out from underneath my own and waved me over as if telling me to lean in. As I did, he placed his hands on my cheeks. He brushed a strand of hair behind my ear and caressed my face gently. I rested my face against his hands. They were warm and comforting.
"You're beautiful," he slurred out, his eyes drooping slightly.
"Thank you, Kenny. I should let you rest," I placed my palms on top of his hands and intertwined our fingers.
"No, I have to tell you this, baby,"
I raised my eyebrow, startled by his abrupt change of character. "Alright. Go on,"
"I did leave Tammy for you. I love you, (Y/n). You have no idea how much I love you,"
I didn't say anything for a few moments. There were many things I could've said.
Such as:
I love you, too.
Or anything else along those lines. Instead, as Kenny pushed his face closer to mine in an attempt to kiss me, I pulled away. "I'm sorry Kenny, but I'm scared that you aren't aware of what you're doing. I can't let you make a decision you'll regret while in the state you're in,"
"I know what I'm doing," his eyes were squinted as if he were falling asleep.
"Goodnight, Ken," I rose from my place and was beginning to walk away from his bed. I wanted to talk to a doctor. I wanted to know what happened to cause him to pass out like that.
"Please don't leave me," he whispered out. His eyes were dull but filled with pleading. It made my heart sink and I begrudgingly made my way back to him.
"It's funny," I chuckled out slightly as I sat back down beside him and intertwine our fingers, "Somehow I always find my way back to you,"
"I'm just that attractive," was the last thing he whispered out as his eyes closed and his breathing slowed down.
