VERA'S POV
I took Tim to Father Christmas (Santa Claus) when we were called out of the cue. He was excited to sit down on the man's lap to receive gifts from him.
I smiled at him when he ran back to me with the packages. I unveiled the gifts for him and received knockouts as applause for coming.
I held his hand tightly and led him back to where we left his parents, but we didn't see any of them around. I became unhappy and jealous.
Jack could still love Monica. He is ill, she can seduce him like the first day I met her and they could be making out somewhere in a special way and probably plan a reunion while… Jesus Christ! Vera, come back home! I stopped my thoughts from going to an extreme.
"Mom, can we go to the playground?" Tim asked, pointing at some group of children running around a shed.
"Okay, honey," I pecked him.
I sat down with other parents and watched him mix up with the other kids. It wasn't hard for him to get their attention by introducing a new game and they all started following him around.
He is no different from his father. If only the man would smile the way he smiles at me to every other person, he could win people's customers over. And even get the whole of America to patronize his goods.
But I would be consumed by jealousy, just like that moment when I thought he was having a good time with his ex-wife if he should smile at another woman in that same way.
When a couple beside me laughed, I stole a glance at them and saw them in each other's arms, kissing and cuddling.
They looked much older than me, and that made me wonder what it would be like to be Jack's wife and we would grow older together and watch our kids just like these people and laugh over useless things.
I hugged myself and looked around the crowded playground. The white lights shone brightly where the children ran around, while every other place had green or red bulbs, which made it hard for me to make out the faces of the people around me.
I wondered where Jack went and who he would be with even if Monica left. Well, there's no two ways about it, Monica will probably ground him for all I care.
He has been the one holding my phone since we were supposed to be together tonight and tomorrow night, he promised.
Why did she have to appear today? I had thought this Christmas would be an amazing one since she would be out of the picture.
Just when I thought Jack had control over himself, she appeared to change the story with her sassy body, especially since I started seeing physical changes as a result of my pregnancy.
I kept an eye on Tim, but I kept looking around and expecting him to appear out of the blue. Instead of him, a teenage, slim, and dark girl came to sit beside me.
She smiled at me and I returned her smile, wondering where I had met such a person before. There were a lot of blacks around, but she looked particularly familiar to me.
"Are you waiting for someone?" She asked me.
"Not really, my son is among the kids playing in the field," I replied, then asked; "Why?"
"Oh, nothing. I'm also waiting for someone. You look exceptionally beautiful tonight," She said as if she knew me before. As if she has been watching me.
That made me feel uncomfortable and I shifted on the long seat to look at her closely. She wore a blue jacket to go with her jeans and a white polo shirt. I wasn't shaken because I knew that she couldn't hurt me or do anything stupid since we were in public.
She had short hair that was perfectly trimmed like that of some men. She wore three earrings on each ear and a nose ring.
When she lifted her hands to tuck strands of her short hair behind her ears, her bangles jangled and I saw her fingers covered by rings of different kinds.
I couldn't see her face well enough to know if she was pretty, but she looked good and smelt nice. I only noticed her lip gloss which seemed to be the only makeup that ever scraps her dark face.
"Have we met before?" I asked curiously. I remember having seen someone like her before, just that I can't recall where.
"Do you think?" She asked back.
"Just forget about it. It's nice to meet you, I will leave first," I hushed and went to take Tim home.
"Then I should go too, Miss Vera," I didn't know she was right behind me so her voice made me bolt.
"Hey, how did you know me?!" I asked her, but she smiled radiantly and walked into the crowd.
I grabbed Tim's hand and took him to the car. Luckily, Max didn't go anywhere, so he told me that Jack was probably looking for us because he came to ask him if he saw us.
I was glad because that meant that he wasn't really with Monica or anyone else, but we just missed paths because of the crowd.
I told him to call him and tell him that we were waiting for him in the car. He did and in a short while, Jack appeared from the crowd.
"I was looking for you guys," he said, hugging both Tim and me.
"Same here. Let's go home, it's getting late," I said to him.
"Max, take Tim home and make sure he goes to bed early. You can handle his dinner, right?"
"Yes, I can manage," Max answered.
"What about us?" I asked as Max drove away.
"I have some place that I want you to go visit with me. We will go back tomorrow morning. Are you coming?" He grinned, offering a hand.
"Did you leave me with any other choice?" I smiled and accepted his hand.
"I hope you are ready because it is time," he said.
"Time for what?" I asked, frowning in curiosity.
"Time to do whatever I want with you." He chuckled softly and kissed my knuckles.
"Jeez! I have already forgotten about that! Jack…" I trailed off.
"Don't worry, it's just gonna be fun!"
"I hope it's not what I am thinking?" I pleaded as a car parked in front of us.
"It's our ride, let's go." He said as he opened the car for me to get in first. "What are you thinking?" He laughed when we were settled in the car.
