🔞 VERA 🔞
"Why don't you want to work here again? I thought you and Mr. J. T got along well, and I remember you said during the interview that working with us is your biggest dream. Miss Vera, what went wrong?"
I looked at the plump woman whose name should've been Mrs Biggie and not Mrs Briggs, and didn't know the excuse to feed her with.
These days, I don't think before acting and that's why I said I'm sick because I am acting strangely to an extent.
"Well, the problem isn't from you, the company or anyone else and, what I said to you during the interview, I meant it. But you see, I have other dreams. I wish you'd understand,"
"Understand what exactly? You are not even making sense at all. Anyway, it's not in my place to sign this letter, it will only be valid if the boss signs it himself, so I think you should submit it directly to him. That's how we function here,"
No way! Meet that jerk again? It's because of him that I am hurting like this. Why did he have to be my boss anyways?
"I'm sorry, Mrs Briggs. Whether he signs it or not, I am out of here and I can never walk through that door again." I tried to sound respectful as I stood up to leave.
The older woman stood up too to reply, but her phone rang as if waiting for me to finish. I knew the woman wasn't done with me, so I had to wait for her to answer the call before leaving.
"Hello! This is… What? Tim, what did you say happened to your father? Don't cry, I'm on my way now and I will call the ambulance too."
Mrs Briggs frenziedly stared at her phone as she typed in a number.
"Is there any problem?" I asked curiously.
"I've got to go now! Mr J. T is in a critical condition and he stays with just his little son." Mrs Briggs said as she hurried out of the office.
I followed her, surprised at myself for feeling bad about the same man I would have prayed for God to send to hell.
Why am I worried about this man that has caused me so much pain? Wasn't I submitting my resignation letter just now because I don't want to see his face ever again?
"Ehm… Mrs Briggs?" I called when the woman was about to enter her car.
"Yes? Please, Miss Santos, I will talk to you later if it's about the letter, I can get him to sign it when he gets back to work. If it's alright with you, help me give it to my assistant!" Mrs Briggs said and turned to enter her car.
"I'm sorry, it's not really about that! Can I go with you to see… your boss if you don't mind?" I asked.
This very action proved that I don't have any single pride for myself anymore. And I have gone completely mad!
Mrs Briggs gave me a sidelong look. She didn't expect that from me.
"Alright! There's no problem at all, get in the car and let's go." She beamed.
I hurriedly entered the car and sat beside her in the backseat. Mrs Briggs couldn't take her eyes off me. She made it obvious to me that I am confusing her.
I am also confused. What exactly am I going there to do? He has a son, doesn't that tell me that he is married? I looked out the window, avoiding the woman's prying gaze.
She called an ambulance and gave them directions to Mr. J. T's residence. As the car drove past the residential areas, I wondered where they were taking me.
I thought of asking the woman because I lived here as a child and never heard that some people built houses around the place the car was going into, but I had to wait and get to the root of this madness since I already started the journey.
