WRITER'S POV
"Vera?" Jackson called worriedly as he gathered her into his arms. "I'm sorry, look at me."
Vera looked at his face with blurry vision. She smiled and raised her left hand to caress his face.
"If I don't die in your hands, then I will live long," she whispered before she lost consciousness again and her hand fell limblessly to her stomach.
"How dare you smile and crack such a joke in this condition?" Jack hugged her tightly and shut his eyes to subdue his tears.
He carried her into his office and called Mrs Briggs to help him get a female doctor.
"No one is allowed to come into my office, get me clothes that would fit Miss Vera. Bye!" He ended the call and tried to dress up before the doctor arrived.
Vera lay on the couch in his office and the only thing covering her nakedness was his jacket. He walked about restlessly in his office when he waited for the doctor.
When he heard a knock, he pushed the door open without making sure it was the doctor. He was lucky, the female doctor went straight to work.
"What exactly happened to her? This is an indecent act of brutality and seems to me like rape. Which dog did this to her? Maybe the person doesn't live in this country because of the penalty…"
"Doctor?" He cut her off.
"Oh, sorry, but this is too much!"
"It's not rape! Besides, I called you here to treat her and not to pass judgment on anyone; the last time I checked, you are a doctor and not a lawyer!" He snarled.
The doctor became calm when she understood the message he was trying to pass to her. As she injected the vaccine into her, Vera's eyes opened and Jack rushed over to hold her.
"You are fine, right? I know the pain you must be going through right now, but I can guarantee that you are going to be fine." He kissed her forehead and held her hand tightly.
"I fainted again? I should get used to the feeling by now," she turned her attention to the doctor. "There's nothing to worry about, I'm okay."
"I still need to prescribe some drugs for you to help your wounds heal faster. I also think you should be careful about…"
"All right, doctor… I think you should go now, she's awake. Thanks for coming, Mrs Briggs will see to your payment." He cut the doctor off again and almost pushed her out of his office.
Just as the doctor left, Mrs Briggs handed three shopping bags to him as she waited by the door to see the doctor off.
Jack locked the door and helped Vera dress up in the new clothes and shoes. She was too weak to argue with him so he drove her to his house. She bathed with hot water and went straight to bed as soon as she got to the mansion.
She was awakened by Tim who came to her immediately after he came back from school.
"Good evening, Ms. Vera!" He greeted her excitedly.
"Hey, you're back from school already?" Vera asked in confusion, then she saw the time.
"You must've slept all day for you not to keep track of time. Dad wants to take me and Bili out for a walk; he rarely does that, so I want you to come with us!" Tim requested.
"Who is Bili?" Vera questioned, petting his hair.
"My puppy, a gift from my grandma!" He replied happily. "You're coming right?!"
How will she break his heart by telling him that she's in pain and can't go? She smiled weakly at him and nodded. It might help her.
"Young man, you have to wait for me outside while I dress up," she said.
"Got it!" He giggled and jumped down from the bed.
When he left, she pushed the bed sheets aside and looked at her reddish laps. She was surprised she was not bleeding anywhere because the pains were skin ripping.
She sprayed her herbal pain relief perfume and wore one of her long gowns and a sweater so her whole body would be covered up. She doesn't want Tim to suspect a thing.
When she got downstairs, father and son were waiting for her. Jack looked worried while Tim looked excited. The little boy has no idea of what's going on between the adults.
"Can I call you Mummy?" Tim asked when she pecked him.
Vera was surprised. Isn't everything happening too fast? She looked up at Jackson's face, silently begging him to interfere and get his son's thoughts off that side.
Maybe it's because she has been playing nice and the little guy feels she could fit into a mother figure.
"Hey, Tim! Give Miss Vera some break, you can't call just anyone mother!" Jack read her mind, and that made her angry, too.
His words prickled her skin. Did he say that to save her from the situation at hand or to tell his son that she's no one of importance to them?
So she's just anyone to him? What was she expecting from a man who insulted her in public without remorse?
She cleared her throat. "If you guys are ready, I am!" She smiled fauxly at the little boy and left them alone.
Tim looked at his father sadly as he pulled him closer for a hug.
"I'm sorry, son. Don't make her more uncomfortable than she is already. We can't afford to let her go now," Jackson advised his son as he led him out.
Vera avoids getting close to Jack or letting Tim leave her side or leave them alone; she has to make the formidable man understand that what happened between them doesn't mean they are okay now.
Jackson seemed to notice, and he kept his distance as they walked farther into the place she had thought was a forest and had imagined wild animals admiring the white house and waiting for the slightest chance to deal with the thoughtless billionaire who resides in it.
She was amazed by what she saw. It was a plantation with so many people working on it. The men, covered in sweat and dirt, hailed Jackson. When she had thought she knew this man, another version of him unfolds.
As he engaged with the workers, she spotted five small houses built closely together, which the trees had covered, and one wouldn't have seen it if not for closer observation. Who could have thought such a place existed Downtown?
At that moment, she wished she was on good terms with him. She had a lot of questions to ask him and the curiosity almost killed her. That made her not follow Tim when he ran off with his puppy to play with the kids, helping their parents out.
"Boss, when are you going to introduce her to us?!" One of the young men resting under an orange tree asked, grinning at her.
Vera waited for him to do just that or at least offer to show her around since he saw how surprised and curious she looked, but he disappointed her yet again.
"Do I pay you to ask me useless questions?! Get back to work or get fired asshole!" He snapped at the guy.
Vera shook her head and walked away from his sight. She wandered around the place on her own and was enjoying her own company when he suddenly appeared beside her.
"Can you please stop avoiding me and let's talk about it? Why don't you just lash out at me instead of ignoring this?" He asked.
"What would you have me say to you? Jack, all you care about is yourself and your feelings alone! Don't stand in front of me and pretend you care 'cause that hurts even more than you fûcking me!" She said loudly.
Some people heard her words and turned their heads to look at them.
