§—– CHASING AFTER THE ABSENT –—§

3RD PERSON POV

As the clock struck 2 AM, you let out a weary sigh and rubbed your eyes, feeling the weight of exhaustion bearing down on you. The house had been quiet for the past two hours, signaling that William had finally drifted off to sleep. With a sense of determination, you knew that now was the time to carry out your intended plan. Steeling yourself for what lay ahead, you made your way down to the living room once more, the darkness enveloping you like a thick veil.

As you made your way to the basement, the loud silence in the living room filled you with a sense of unease, igniting a slight tint of fear within you. However, you knew that you had come too far to turn back now. You had gone to great lengths to stay at William's house, and it was time to do what you had set out to do. You shook off the gushing thoughts in your brain, focusing instead on the possibilities of what you might find down there.

You couldn't help but feel relieved that you would at least be able to hear if someone were to wake up, but you quickly decided not to jinx yourself and pushed the thought aside. You opened the door to the basement, the moonlight only lighting up a few steps before the stairs were consumed by the wicked darkness.

I checked the pockets of the sweatpants William had lent me, making sure that I had my phone with me. The thought of having to climb the creaky wooden stairs again was unbearable, and I knew it would only increase the risk of getting caught.

As you made your descent down the stairs, you accidentally slipped on one of the steps, causing you to let out a short squeal before quickly covering your mouth in a panic. Although you had managed to catch yourself before falling, you couldn't help but feel a sense of dread, hoping that no one had heard the noise that had escaped your lips.

As you made your way further into the basement, you could feel the suspense building up in your chest, eager to finally see whether what you had seen before was real or not. However, the thought of confronting William if it turned out to be true filled you with uncertainty. Would you be ready to face the truth if it turned out that he was a disgusting person? It would certainly connect all the dots and leave you with a difficult decision to make.

As you finally stepped down the last step with a creak and a thump, your bare feet made contact with the cold concrete floor, causing you to shudder slightly. You searched for the flashlight, unsure if there was a light switch nearby. After a moment, your hands landed upon the switch, and you flipped it on. The light flickered with determination before a musky orange color illuminated the room, revealing the messy office once more.

Your body turned immediately towards the wall where you had seen the pictures before, but.. No. there were no pictures at all. Confusion and doubt filled your mind. Was it all just a lie? Were your eyes playing tricks on you? You could have sworn you saw the pictures before, but now there was nothing there.

The discovery that there were no pictures on the wall made tears prick in your eyes. Had it all been for nothing? You were sure you had seen them before. You let out a weary sigh before letting your eyes wander around the room. There was nothing out of the ordinary. It seemed that William was just a businessman with kids after all.

Suddenly, rage entered your body. You were not crazy! Your eyes frantically searched around the room before you began to search the entire office. You opened every file, drawer, and checked all of the shelves. You even almost tore apart the blueprints that were scattered everywhere in your search for the truth.
