"First of all, can you tell me what happened between you two?" Henry asked, covering his face with his hands. "Secondly, Rowan, I'm curious about why you're involved in a gang?" His voice grew louder at the end of the sentence, and William could sense his frustration.
Rowan gave William a knowing look, as if he knew what William was about to say. He leaned in and whispered through gritted teeth, "Fine, I'll let you off the hook this time, but I'm keeping an eye on you." His hushed yell seemed to amuse Rowan, and his grin only grew wider. Henry looked up at the two, looking confused and disheveled. "What are you guys talking about?" he asked, furrowing his eyebrows.
The room was heavy with silence as Rowan brushed off Henry's question, his eyes dark and brooding. He stood tall and proud, his shoulders squared, a picture of defiance.
"I've said it's Mr. Emily to you, Rowan," Henry barked, his voice sharp and cutting. "You've got one warning. You both need to grow up."
Rowan's jaw tightened, his fists clenching at his sides. He could feel the anger and frustration boiling within him, threatening to spill over. But he held his tongue, refusing to give Henry the satisfaction of a response.
And then, like a bolt from the blue, Henry delivered the final blow.
"I can see you two giving each other the eye," he sneered, his eyes flitting between Rowan and William. "You need to cut it out."
Rowan recoiled, his heart pounding in his chest. He felt exposed, vulnerable, like Henry had somehow seen through his carefully constructed facade. He stole a furtive glance at William, searching for any hint of a joke or a smirk, but found none.
"Go home, Rowan," Henry said, his voice firm and unyielding. "I need to speak with William."
Rowan hesitated, his eyes flickering between Henry and William. He felt like a caged animal, trapped and powerless.
With a sigh, he gave William a childish raspberry blow, a final act of defiance, before storming out of the room, slamming the door behind him.
"Sit down, my friend," Henry spat, scoffing at the word 'friend', his voice dripping with disdain. William reluctantly took a seat, feeling malice seep into his skull.
"Listen," Henry began, his voice low and conspiratorial. "Did you know that Rowan is a gang member?"
William's heart skipped a beat.
But he knew that he couldn't let Henry see his fear. So he took a deep breath and spoke with confidence.
"He's not in a gang," William said firmly, straightening his tie. "Those are just his friends. They're bikers, sure, but they're not dangerous."
Henry's eyes widened in surprise, and then relief. He let out a grateful sigh, as if a weight had been lifted from his shoulders.
"Well, that's a relief," he said, his voice tinged with sarcasm. "I was worried for a moment there."
William suppressed a smile. He knew that he had dodged a bullet, but he also knew that he couldn't let his guard down.
