Maya was fast asleep by the time we finally got back to our neighbourhood.
For a minute I just looked at her, tightly wrapping my jacket around her as soft snores escaped.
I had to admit, this was an afternoon well spent.
I never would have thought I'd be hanging out with Maya again, much less going to Maryland.
I knew how much Maya had always loved the place.
I'd tag along whenever her mother or Elena, her older sister would take her sometimes.
Maya always wanted to do everything all the time. It was exhausting how hyper she was when we were younger. And it's not like Maryland was particularly big or that entertaining. It was easy to get tired of the place but Maya never did...
When I worked there over the summer, Cindy would sometimes drive over and we would fool around on the rides that hadn't been removed yet.
Maryland had been but one of our secret rendezvous spots in town.
While Maya still saw it as a place of childish wonder, it was so much more to me all because of Cindy.
I could never tell Maya that though.
What I had with Cindy was for her and me only. The rest of the world didn't have to know.
I finally decided to nudge Maya awake but just as I was going in, an idea cane to my mind and I grinned at how much of a genius I was.
"Oh my gosh! It's Joe Jonas!" I shrieked in a high girly voice.
Maya woke with a start looking from left to right frantically and slightly confused.
"Did you just say Joe Jonas?"
I snickered.
She narrowed her eyes at me.
"Grow up, Zachary."
She sat up and stretched, letting out a yawn. "Oh, are we home already?"
"May, it's 6pm." I told her.
Her eyes widened and she checked the time on the dashboard. "No!"
"What's wrong?" I asked. "Don't tell me you have a curfew."
"No! I mean, yes." She yelled. "But I do have a little brother who we left at school!"
"Oh crap." I muttered.
We forgot about Eddie. As if the little man didn't hate me enough already.
"Okay," I spoke as I turned the keys in the ignition. "We'll go get him."
Maya shook her head. "No, he's probably - "
At that moment, Maya's phone begun to ring on her lap.
She picked it up and looked at the screen, her face immediately dropping.
"Oh no." She muttered before answering.
"Hello daddy."
Her father's voice was so loud, even I heard him. Maya held the phone away from her ear. "Come in right now, Maya Patricia Stevens!"
Well, this is my cue to leave.
"And bring Zachary with you!"
"Well, we're dead." I muttered.
"Yup." Maya responded before groaning and getting out of the car.
I can't remember the last time I was face to face with Lieutenant Stevens.
