I still see your shadows in my room
Can't take back the love that I gave you
It's to the point where I love and I hate you
And I cannot change you so I must replace you (oh)
Easier said than done
I thought you were the one
Listening to my heart instead of my head
You found another one, but
I am the better one
I won't let you forget me~Juice World, Lucid Dreams
"So we're just gonna pretend you didn't just spend literally all day at work, yesterday?" I snapped at my mother.
"Zack, I'm tired." She yawned as she placed her keys on the kitchen island. "Could we not talk about this right now?"
There were dark circles underneath her eyes with bags accompanying them indicating that she had gotten little to no sleep.
But I was too mad to care right now.
"Of course you're tired! Mum are you taking more shifts at the hospital again" I demanded.
She set her purse down. "Zack, baby, you don't understand."
"Don't understand what? Why haven't you been talking to me or telling me anything for that matter. Are we having money problems?"
She stopped in her spot. "No. I already told you, honey, that shouldn't even concern you."
I hated that she was so calm in all situations. I hated that I was yelling at my own mother.
My sweet, forgiving mother. But I was so frustrated with her at the moment.
"Mum, I found the flier and the business card for that real estate agent. Are you actually planning on selling the house?"
She stayed silent and frowned.
She couldn't sell this house. It was just a building sure, but it was a building that held so many irreplaceable memories.
"Zachary, maybe you should sit down." She spoke softly.
"You are planning on selling, aren't you? Mum you can't do that. If it's the money, I won't go to college, I'll just take a gap year. I could get my job back at Mr Wright's garage and -"
"No!" She snapped.
It was so rare hearing her yell that I was taken aback momentarily.
She got up and started walking towards me.
"I'm the adult, not you, Zachary. It's my job to worry."
"But -"
"But nothing." She placed her hand on my cheek. "You go to school like a normal kid and don't worry about a thing. We'll talk about this later."
I could see it in her eyes, a plea of, 'please let this go for now'.
I sighed. "Sure, mum." I placed a kiss on her forehead. "Get some rest."
"And you go learn your calculus or algebra or whatever they teach you in those schools that you'll actually never apply to real life." She spoke with a smile.
I forced one back to appease her.
She patted my cheek before turning to go back up the stairs.
I watched her disappear before leaving the house myself.
I didn't even feel like going to school today.
It's days like this when I would ditch school and call Cindy to hang out instead.
I looked at my phone wondering if I could still do that. But that would be admitting defeat in this little game we were playing and I wasn't about to do that.
