Now listen to me baby (oh, oh-oh)
Before I love and leave you (oh, oh-oh)
They call me heart breaker (oh, oh-oh)
I don't wanna deceive you (oh, oh-oh)

~Taio Cruz, Break your heart.

"Emma." I spoke.

The red headed cheerleader was sitting at one of the outdoor benches with her friends surrounding her looked up at me.z

She didn't seem at all surprised about my appearance.

"Oh, Zachary -" she started in a cheery tone.

"It's Zack." I told her sternly.

Her smile dropped slightly and she seemed to study me a bit more carefully.

"A minute please." I spoke gruffly.

We didn't need an audience for this.

She gave what seemed like a knowing smile to her friends. They all just giggled as she got up and walked over to me.

"What's up?" She asked, still sounding too happy.

I nodded in the direction of a tree not too far away and led the way in that direction.

"Yes Zacky?" She gave me a smile.

"Don't do that." I told her. "We're not friends."

Emma is the only one Cindy told about us.

God knows why. Sure they're friends but I've always known Emma as someone who can't keep her mouth shut.

"Someone's cranky." Emma added.

I rolled my eyes. "Why did you nominate me for boyfriend points?" I asked getting straight to the point.

"Because you're hot and girls like your bad boy persona." She spoke with a shrug.

For a second I paused. She wasn't even going to try and deny it.

"Gee, thanks. But I don't want it. Take it down."

"Can't. Cassie gives certain cheerleaders the privilege of being able to cast nominees. I already used my turn. No take backs."

I rolled my eyes. "Okay, let's drop the act. We both know that the only reason you're doing this is because of Cindy."

Emma smirked unphased. "And what if I am?"

I scoffed. "So Cindy has you doing her dirty work?"

"Oh please Zack, like you're not doing the same thing by 'dating' Maya."

"I am dating Maya." I countered.

Emma laughed. "Right. And I'm going to clown school." She spoke sarcastically.

"It would suit you." I shrugged.

Her smile dropped, her expression turning bitter. "I know you're manipulating Maya, Zack. Cindy knows it too."

"Yeah, you would know a little something about manipulation, huh?"

She knew what I was talking about. She knew what her and Cassie did to Sandy.

She glared at me. "Why don't we stick to the matter at hand, Zack? We both know Maya isn't the type who likes playing games. So maybe you should do everyone a favour and end this game right now."

"So now you care about Maya?"

"She is my friend." Emma shrugged.

"Yet you watched Cindy steal her boyfriend."

Emma sighed. "Listen. You and Cindy, you're both screwing people over because you want each other. Why can't you admit that and just get together already?"

I grinned. "So Cindy is playing Golden boy?"

Emma rolled her green eyes. "What you're doing is so much worse."

I wasn't admitting anything to Emma.

All she had done was confirm Cindy's schemes.

This was a game to Cindy. And I wasn't going to lose.

"Unlike your friend, I'm not manipulating anyone. And if I was, how would Cindy and I be any different."

"Because at the end of this, Cindy doesn't get hurt, you don't get hurt, Daniel will probably move on but Maya? She has always had real feelings for you and you know it."

I scoffed. "What do you mean?"

"Wow!' Emma laughed. "You really are clueless, aren't you?"

I glared at her. "What the heck are you talking about, Emma?"

"We might not all be as close as we once were when we were kids but everyone remembers the epic love triangle of middle school."

I rose my brows at Emma. Middle school was when we started having 'boy-girl' parties. It was all about who would get together and whatever but I really didn't care about that at the time. I guess I was still just enjoying being a kid.

"Love triangle."

Emma laughed. "Yes. Ryan liked Maya, Maya liked you and you liked Maya."

My eyes widened. "You're crazy. Maya and I didn't have 'secret crushes' on each other."

"Oh yeah? Then why were you always blocking her and Ryan?"

I never had anything against Ryan when we were kids. He was my friend. I liked the guy. He was mostly on the quiet side, mummy's boy, he was the guy who always had to leave early because his mum didn't like it when he stayed out too long.

The only time I ever remember having a problem with Ryan was when I thought he was trying to steal my best friend. He would always try to get her to hang out with him and him alone.

Huh.

I guess old Ryan really might have had a crush on Maya.

It didn't even occur to me that that was what could have been going on.

Now I almost felt guilty for all the times I would deliberately interrupt them and steal Maya away.

Maybe if I had just let them be, that's who she would have been dating right now. Nice, quiet and safe Ryan.

"Emma. Your version of our childhood is way different from mine. But then again, you've always had a talent for concocting stories."

She grew serious. "You're right, Zack. Maybe we should forget about the past."

She spun around and stormed off.

Emma had never been good at keeping her composure, especially when she knew that she was guilty. Which she was.

But she was right, that was in the past.

And it had nothing to do with me. If anyone should have been calling her out, it was Fred.

My issue was with Cindy and this game she insisted on playing. Nominating me for Cassie's stupid poll was her next move.

Now it was time for me to play mine.

It was time to turn the heat up a little....
