Looking so innocent
I might believe you if I didn't know
Could've loved you all my life
If you hadn't left me waiting in the cold
And you got your share of secrets
And I'm tired of being last to know
And now you're asking me to listen
Cause it's worked each time before
You're not sorry ~Taylor Swift"And that's your reading assignment for today." Miss Ryan spoke, concluding our English literature lesson before the bell even rang.
"Oh thank goodness. I cannot wait to get out of here." Cassie groaned from beside me.
I rolled my eyes as I packed my stuff in my backpack.
"You love this book." I reminded her.
And I wasn't wrong. Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe was yet another book that Cassie had fought to get added to the curriculum.
"Yes I do but that's not why I wanna get out of here. I'm just excited about this afternoon. I get to see Cody bite back his words about me not being a good matchmaker. And you and Zach get to make Cindy and Daniel even more jealous by being the cutest couple that ever lived. Did you tell him that we need to meet up so that we can go through a few things? You guys seriously need to work on your PDA."
Cassie had taken out her compact mirror and was glossing up her lips.
I definitely wasn't as excited. Hanging out with everyone like before would be more fun without all the pretending. Not to mention how much tension existed in our group of friends lately.
I tried to think about how mad Cassie would be if I told her that I didn't want to go.
What exactly was the end game to this plan anyway? Make Daniel and Cindy jealous? Then what? It wouldn't change the fact that they had cheated.
I had seen Daniel storm off at the party and wanted to chase after him. I had seen his face this morning and wanted to sit him him down so that we could talk about what could be bothering him.
This plan wasn't doing anything but reminding me about how much I would always gravitate towards him. Reminding me of how much I missed him and wanted to be with him.
"Hey guys." Georgia walked up to us, already packed up. Ryan stood behind her. Way taller and looking a bit awkward, not meeting my eyes.
"Hey Georgie." Cassie greeted with a bright smile.
"I feel like everyone stares at me when we do Nigerian books" Georgia grumbled with a frown.
"Maybe because you're the only Nigerian in the class." Cassie pointed out like it would have been obvious.
"Which I'm proud of." Georgia spoke quickly. "But I just hope no one thinks modern day Nigeria is a place where we live in huts and have random wrestling tournaments for entertainment."
I giggled. "I think everyone knows that the book was written in the 50s."
Georgia rose her perfectly done brows. "Oh yeah? You'd be surprised by how many people still think African is a country and we still live among lions and don't have bottled water."
I shrugged. I couldn't really understand Georgia's experience because I hadn't been through it. Even though her parents had immigrated here when she was fairly young, she still had a lot of her roots in her. In fact, if you listened carefully, you could even detect a slight hint of her Igbo accent.
"We should have a heritage day." Cassie mused. "We could all trace our ancestry and what not and you and Ryan could do presentations on where you're from."
