An Honest Mistake

I was on Callie's service today. We were treating a patient in the pit. Hunt and Cristina walked over.

"52-year-old male, fell down a flight of stairs," Callie said.

"He's five days post-op from a cholecystectomy, which looks to have caused the fall," I said.

"Why would having your gall bladder removed cause a fall?" Cristina asked. I pulled up the patient's gown revealing the surgical scar which looked infected.

"A non-laparoscopic choli?" Hunt asked. "Sir, what hospital did you have your operation at?"

"Here. Uh, my surgeon was Dr Campbell," The patient said.

"That explains it," Cristina said.

"Excuse us for a moment," Hunt said. "Okay. All right, what?"

"Campbell was Seattle Grace's first female surgeon, as pioneer as it gets. Mostly she just sits in her office and spreads prestige around. She ... still does routine surgery now and then," Callie said.

"You mean botches routine surgery. I'll page the chief," Cristina said.

"No, page Campbell. It's her patient," Hunt said.

"And let her maim the guy again? How about we page someone who actually knows how to operate instead of some dinosaur who refuses to retire her scalpel and go join her friends in Boca?" Cristina said.

"The dinosaur is here. No need to page me," Dr Campbell said.

Mark, Callie and I were standing at the nurse's station.

"So, did you scope her out yet?" Callie asked Mark.

"Who?" Mark asked.

"Arizona," Callie said.

"Oh, right, that. No, I haven't had a chance to swing by peds and ask the nurse to point out the attending who kissed my friend in a dirty bar bathroom," Mark said.

"Well, at least you're still good for coffee," Callie said reaching for the coffee that Mark had with him.

"Oh, that's not for you," Mark said pushing the coffee away.

"Coffee? Why, thank you, Mark," Addison said walking over.

"Well, it's, uh, that's not for you, either," Mark said walking over to Lexie.

Callie and I were back in the pit with Dr Campbell, Cristina and Hunt.

"You've got a minor fracture, so you won't need surgery. You should be on your feet within a few weeks," Callie said.

"I don't know what I was thinking. I knew the wound wasn't healing as fast as I had hoped, but ..." John the patient said.

"Next time, you call me, John. Dr Yang ... explain to my patient what you feel I should've done differently in order to avoid this complication," Dr Campbell said. "Now don't be shy, Dr Yang,"

"Okay. Well, patients' status post minimally invasive procedures have been shown to have decreased post-surgical discomfort and recovery times," Cristina said.

"In human, please, Dr Yang," Dr Campbell said.

"This surgery should've been done laparoscopically," Cristina said.

"Dr Hunt ... perhaps you can explain to Dr Yang, why I chose to do the surgery this way?" Dr Campbell asked.

"Although some doctors prefer to use the new technology, there are others who believe it's actually riskier since we can't see or move around as much during the surgery.
It's half a dozen either way," Hunt said.

"Bravo, Dr Hunt. Do you understand, John?" Dr Campbell said.

"Yes. I have no doubt you did the right thing by me, Dr Campbell," John said.

"Wonderful! Now, Dr Yang ... please take our patient to C.T. ... Maybe you'll learn something in the process ... while I confer with Dr Hunt about, uh, our course of treatment,"

I was getting coffee.

"Arizona called me a newborn," Callie said walking over.

"Max, get Torres her usual please," I said handing him some cash.

"Coming right up," Max said.

"Why did she call you a newborn?" I asked.

"Because I'm new to the whole kissing girls thing," Callie said. "Should I be offended?"

"No. Some people just prefer someone more experienced," I said.

"Newborn though? That's offensive," Callie said. "Would you call Addison a newborn?"

"Hell no. She's terrifying when she's pissed and hot but mostly terrifying," I said. "Just tell Robbins that you've got experience maybe not with women but you've got life experience,"

Hunt and I were walking down the hallway when I saw Mark and Derek punching each other. Derek had Mark pinned down and kept swinging punches until Mark flipped them over. Hunt and I ran over trying to pull Mark off of Derek. By the time we got them separated Meredith, Addison, Dr Webber and Bailey were part of the crowd that had gathered around. Meredith went to deal with Derek. Hunt and I pulled Mark to his feet. Callie worked on his hand while I cleaned up Mark's face.

"It's just like when we were kids," I said.

"I cleaned you up more than you had to clean me up," Mark said. "And Scott,"

"Who's Scott? Ex-boyfriend?" Callie asked.

"Scott was Sage's best friend. They did everything together all the way from kindergarten all the way to the army," Mark said. "He was a better man than most,"

"Was?" Callie asked.

"He was the guy I lit a candle for last week," I said.

Addison, Charlie, Harry and I went to the park. Ace was lying down at Addison's feet while I was playing catch with the boys. The ball hit Harry in the face. I rushed over.

"Are you okay?" I asked sitting on the grass beside him.

"It hurts," Harry said.

"Can I take a look?" I asked. Harry took his hand away from his face. "I can't see a mark. Do you want to sit with Addie for a few minutes?" Harry nodded.

"I didn't mean to hit you. I'm sorry," Charlie said.

"It's okay," Harry said.

"Hug it out," I said. They hugged each other. "Good job for hugging it out," I said. I carried Harry over to Addison. He climbed into her lap. Charlie and I kept playing until he got bored. We started to walk back to the house. We got home and cuddled up on the couch.
