I was walking around with an ice pack on my eye.
"The swelling seems to have gone down," Addison said.
"What happened to you?" Bailey asked.
"Harry had a nightmare," I said pulling down the icepack.
"Have you heard from Shepherd?" Bailey asked.
"Not since he got drunk," I said.
"He'll come around. Just give him time," Addison said.
"The chief is disintegrating before our very eyes," Bailey said.
"I've got to go," I kissed Addison's cheek before I walked into the patient's room. Alex, Meredith, George, Cristina and Izzie were already there with the interns. Mark and Hunt stood to the side.
"You're late Lieutenant," Hunt said.
"Sorry, sir," I said.
"Ladies and gentlemen, this is Mr David Young. Today he'll be receiving a face transplant," Mark said. "Dr Hunt and his team will be recovering the donor's facial graft. We're replacing 70% of Mr Young's face. You can see the deficit here," Mark said showing us a model on the computer.
"Or here," Mr Young said gesturing to his face.
"The donor recovery will include his nose left eye, lips, left zygoma. Why will allotransplantation work better than traditional techniques?" Hunt asked. Lexie raised her hand.
"Better aesthetic outcome, which allows for reinnervation of the facial nerves, giving a better functional result," Lexie said.
"Very good, Dr Grey," Hunt said.
"Then we'll position the flap over Mr. Young's face. How do we know we're in the clear?" Mark asked.
"When the graft turns pink," Lexie said.
"Excellent. Dave, any questions for us?" Mark asked.
"Has anyone seen the donor?" Mr Young asked.
"Yes. He's a match with your age, skin tone and blood type," Mark said.
"What does he look like?" Mr Young said.
"I think you'll be satisfied," Mark said.
"Who am I kidding? It's a face, right? If I end up anything above a point-and-stare freak, I'm gonna call it a success," Mr Young said. We stood outside at the nurses' station waiting to see who Mark would take into surgery with him.
"Stevens and Grey," Mark said.
"Yes," Meredith said.
"No, the other Grey," Mark said.
"Really?" Lexie asked. "Great,"
"Great," Meredith said sarcastically.
"You did an awesome job in there. Why don't you call me after the pre-op labs come in?" Mark said to Lexie.
"Dr Sloan, only one resident?" George asked.
"Wait for Bailey. There's already going to be enough of a crowd," Mark said walking off handing Izzie the chart.
"What the hell?" Meredith asked.
"I don't think you have time to scrub in with Sloan," Cristina said to Izzie.
"Don't worry about it. I can handle it," Izzie said. The interns started talking about Lexie and Mark. I whistled loudly.
"Shut your mouths!" Stevens snapped.
"Finish the chart. I'll be back," Izzie said walking off.
"Grey, O'Malley, Montgomery-Sloan, I need you on pre-ops and post-ops," Bailey said walking over.
