For the first time in years life felt kind of okay. Brenda was expected to make a full recovery. Frypan was going around telling cringy jokes that still made everyone laugh because we were free. Most of us were carefree. I could see that Teresa was off, but she had been for a while so I didn't worry about it.
"At this point the guns may as well be decoration,"Sonya said.
"So you wouldn't have shot us if you hadn't spotted Aris?"I asked.
"Probably not. None of you are really threats, though some of you are a bit weird,"She said, whispering the last part.
"I don't know. I think they're pretty cool,"I shrugged.
"Your girlfriend's nice Aris,"Harriet remarked. I felt my face go beat red at her words. It's been years since I've actually heard anyone actually call me that.
"I know,"He shrugged. I tried not to smile like an idiot as I interlocked our fingers.
"Are two best friends?"I asked.
"Of course. This stick over here doesn't leave me alone,"Sonya said, pointing at her.
"Stick?"I asked.
"Icer slang,"She shrugged.
"Does everyone else use slang? We just said whatever we knew. We even called ourselves the Mazers. Kind of lame."
"Extremely lame,"Harriet corrected.
"Guys! We need to hide now!"Newt suddenly exclaimed, fear and panic written on his face. Before I could ask what was going on the sound of a WICKED helicopter came towards the camp. I felt glued to my spot.
"Come on,"Sonya urged. Just as I stood up a missile blew directly into the middle of the camp setting it ablaze. Everything we had fought for and these people had built was gone in seconds. It was just a mess of orange and red flames.
I blinked once, then twice as if it could make this go away. We were finally going to live our lives. We were supposed to be safe.
You need to get out before they kill you.
That was the whole reason we had run in the first place. Now we had to act quick. They wouldn't win. They already took my first friends. I'll be damned if they take my second ones.
"You're right. We have to go."
Without looking back I followed them towards the mountains. At least, I tried. Those same terrible flames were spreading. There was nowhere to go. We were still their guinea pigs, forever trapped.
I turned back towards the tents for some kind of hiding spot. At some point in the chaos I had lost the others as the fumes clouded my vision.
The sound of a WICKED Berg landing let me know how helpless we truly were. We couldn't get out in time.
I spun around trying to see anything though the thick smoke when I felt a hand around my neck. I cried out for someone. I was trying so hard to get out of their grasp. I wanted to live. For the first time I realized how truly precious life was and how fast it could end.
"Please. I don't want to die,"I pleaded. They dragged me along the ground, not listening to anything I said.
"I want to live! Please let me live! We're just kids! We have to much time!"I begged.
"Shut up before I end yours now,"They snapped. Pathetic whimpers shook my body."I said shut up,"They yelled, pressing their gun into my back. I bit my lip to stop my heavy breathing, but all it did was fill my mouth with the metallic taste of blood.
