Chapter 38

It had been almost two weeks since Audrey's mother awkwardly interrupted Rafe and Audrey, and almost two weeks had Audrey tried to forget about it.

Her mom came into her room that night to talk, but Audrey wasn't interested in saying anything.

Rafe and Nathan hadn't spoken either. Neither of them had reached out to the other.

Audrey leaned her elbows on the counter in Rafe's kitchen. He wanted to talk to Nathan, so he and Audrey needed to form a plan to make it work.

Can we talk dude

Rafe eagerly grabbed his phone, Audrey sat up a little straighter and watched him text.

I just want to talk

now's not really a good time
i have plans to sit and do nothing at the pool
but Audrey's at home you can go and seduce her if you want

Audrey stifled a laugh and looked up at Rafe. He put his head in his hands and wiped his mouth.

Can we figure something out so we don't hate each other

no but thanks for the offer

"Give him more time. We'll text him again later." She told Rafe who groaned, knowing that he and Audrey couldn't move forward with their relationship until he talked to Nathan.

He left his conversation with Nathan as it was and reached over to hug Audrey to make her feel better, when Nathan texted again.

"He said no." Rafe said plainly when he walked back inside his house.

Audrey had been waiting on his couch as he went over to the pool to talk to her brother. "What?"

"He straight up said no." He slumped beside her and put his hands on his head. "I can't ask you out."

"You didn't tell him that we're already a thing?" She turned so she was facing him.

"No." He licked his lips. "I didn't want to make things worse for us. He was already getting defensive."

She nodded with understanding and looked away from him. "So what now?"

He shrugged. "We just keep hiding from him, I guess."

"It doesn't bother you that your best friend doesn't approve?" She slumped further on the couch.

"I don't care if the whole island doesn't approve." He explained, "I'd still want to be with you."

She smiled softly and took his hand. "I'm proud of you for trying."

He grinned, "Yeah?"

"Mhm." She replied, when a call came in through her phone.

Audrey got a little excited when she saw that it was from Gabby.

"Hello?" Audrey said in a funny voice when she pressed answer.

"Audrey? Hi. What are you doing tonight?" Gabby asked quickly.

"I'm with Rafe, why?" She asked.

"Slut." Gabby teased but continued, "but that's perfect, actually, if you both want to, I was talking with Jeremy and he said that we should all try that new bar downtown."
