Rhaenyra

Rhaenyra watched the feet of the kingsguard to her front as they walked. She was quite confused on why she was being led deeper into the keep than she had thought she had ever been when she noticed the fire light, a large dragon skull and a man that seemed to be shrinking into himself with grief.

"Father?" She asked walking to his side.

"Balerion was the last living creature to have seen Old Valaria before the Doom." He said barely looking back to acknowledge her. "It's greatness and it's flaws." He continued, turning to her. "When you look at the dragons, what do you see?"

"What?" She asked, perplexed on why he would be asking her this after what had happened to her mother. "You haven't even spoken a word to me since mother's funeral." She said, not attempting to mask the hurt in her voice. "And now you send your kingsguard dow-"

"Answer me." He demanded. "It's important. What do you see?"

She attempted to decipher if he was jesting, he was not. She nodded and began to think.

"I suppose I see us." She said, not realizing it had left her mouth.

"Tell me." He was intrigued.

"Everyone says Targaryens are closer to gods than to men, but they say that because of our dragons." She met his eyes, the grief had vanished and become a sense of understanding. "Without them, we're just like everyone else."

"The idea that we control the dragons..." He nodded. "Is an illusion. They're a power men should never have trifled with. One that brought Valaria it's doom. If we don't mind our histories, it will do the same to us." He said pausing. "Targaryen must understand this to be king..." He caught her eye before continuing. "Or Queen." He paused again. "I'm sorry, Rhaenyra. I have wasted the years since you were born wanting for a son."

This was everything she had ever wanted. Why did it feel wrong?
