"You will all be splitting into partners for this next project. For finding a story of historical significance and putting it into your own words, it does have to have something to do with the history of our territory." The teacher said and then by the tone of his voice, the class realized that he was indeed serious.
"That should be fun for you, Ateara, all that you have to do is turn in a blank sheet of paper." The girl at the back of the room raised her head up to look, as the entire class had burst out laughing at the words of the "mean girls" as the only non-native girl in the room, she took a deep breath.
Then she spoke to reply to the harsh words, only once she had steadied her voice.
"Well, at least I don't have to pay the boys to do my homework for me. Or, is it not money that you're paying them with anymore, Georgie?" She asked and Georgina or "Georgie" as the entire school called her, her face flushed with embarrassment, before it was reddening with rage.
"You bitch!" Georgie lunged forward and she was jumping over the desk to get at Olivia, who pushed her desk over and Georgie crashed into her.
The two girls were punching and kicking hard, each trying to beat the crap out of each other. Georgie had the advantage of being willing to do anything to win, including to cheat on her opponent. But in a straight fight, Olivia took the lead.
Olivia was tall and lean, but she was known for her habits of going into the town of Forks for training and over time, she had started to fill out and it was about to pay off.
Olivia had managed to pin Georgie down onto the floor and she spat out blood onto the floor, from where Georgie had gotten a lucky shot in that had caused Olivia to have blood gushing from her nose.
"All right, let her up. Now." Olivia got off of Georgie and she was using part of her t-shirt to stop the blood from running onto the floor. "Go and see the nurse, Olivia, then go to the Principal's office." She nodded slightly to the teacher and she was grabbing her backpack now carefully off of the floor as she was walking out of the room.
----
"What in wolf's name did you do this time, Ateara?" Olivia smiled faintly underneath the paper towels that she had shoved up her nostrils, at the familiar voice that was almost a teasing tone of voice as she turned to her left, to see that Sam Uley was now almost towering above her.
"Why does everyone always assume that I started it?" Olivia asked as Sam sat down next to her real quickly in the vacant chair. "Also, when did you get so tall?" She asked.
"Georgie?" Sam asked.
"No, I'm Olivia." She said and Sam laughed at the natural comeback from Olivia, who had always been good at those. Even if it was the main thing for which, she always got into trouble at school and at home for. "But, yeah, Georgie again." She said.
"Figures. I stopped by the classroom and I saw that Georgie was scrubbing blood off of the floor with a mop, gloves, mop, protective goggles, the whole thing. I also got your homework, along with a very, very stern lecture from Mr. Thompson about being late to class and missing most of it again." Sam said and quickly, he held out the homework and Olivia nodded a little bit, as she was taking the work and she quickly leafed through it.
"I don't even know how I am going to do this project, Sam, it has to have any significance to history of the reservation. But I don't even belong here, hell, I never have." Olivia said quietly and Sam was looking over at her with a quick shake of his head.
"That is Georgie talking, not you. You do belong here, Livvy, or else you would have already left the reservation." Sam replied and Olivia laughed at the words. "Besides, don't worry about the project. You'll ace it."
"Sam Uley, why exactly are you sounding so damn sure about those words right now?" Olivia asked and Sam pointed at the top page of their homework and Olivia narrowed her eyes quickly. "We're partners on this project?" She asked suspiciously.
"Yep. I convinced Mr. Thompson rather easily, that I was the only one who could even get a chance to keep you quiet and in line, for longer than a minute." Sam replied and Olivia stared at him for a minute or two, before she busted out laughing.
"Ow." Olivia choked out the word after she had laughed so hard for a solid five whole minutes, that her ribs were sore and she was shaking her head.
"Olivia Ateara? Back here again, are you?" The secretary questioned and at the question and the tone of voice, Olivia's laughter was gone in a flash and she shrugged.
"No, I'm just chilling in the chairs outside of the Principal's for no reason." Olivia's smart mouth was a problem and her sarcasm made it worse, as the secretary's face reddened slightly and she just pointed to the door. "Later Uley." Olivia said casually as she hopped up out of her chair and she was walking into the Principal's office and the door closed behind her.
"Another fight with Georgie today, Olivia?" Principal Thompson and Olivia were by now on a first-name basis, unfortunately and he was also the only reason that she was still in school at all.
"Did the paper towels in my nose give it away this time or what?" Olivia asked as she pulled them out of her nose and put them into the nearby trash bin, before she sat down across from him and Principal Thompson sighed.
"Her parents are demanding that you be expelled and transferred over to the high school in Forks, instead of staying here. I do agree with them, that you might find it easier to be in school on that side, as opposed to here." He said and Olivia's eyes narrowed.
"Do I even really get a true choice in this?" Olivia asked with a tone like ice, but the only thing that truly betrayed her worry and her fear, was the expression in her eyes.
"Unfortunately, many of the faculty here agree with them that I've been too lenient with you," Principal Thompson had pulled out a transfer form and he slid it across the desk to her. "I'll need you to have your guardians sign it and then you will return it to me."
Olivia picked it up and then she just simply stared at it for a moment and then her hands were starting to tremble at the new reality, that was sinking in around her.
"No fight?" She asked quietly and Principal Thompson was silent at the words and Olivia gulped, before she was nodding slightly. "I-I'll get this back to you." She stumbled over her words and for once, she had nothing to say in retort.
"Olivia." But Olivia was already slamming the office door behind her as she was walking quickly to her locker.
"Liv?" Sam asked but instead of answering, she was shaking her head and he followed her down the hall with a concerned look. "Olivia, what's wrong?" He asked her again, finally catching her by the arm and she held out the form.
Sam took it and he read it over quickly as he was shaking his head at the transfer form. "He isn't even putting up a fight?" Sam asked as she took the form back, folded it quickly a bit before she tossed it into her bag as she shook her head.
"Nope." She murmured and she slammed her locker shut, storming out of the school.
"Hey hold up, I'll drive you." Sam suggested and she was shaking her head.
"I need to think, Sam, I'll talk to you later." She said and she was walking away from the school, following the road.
