After retrieving her stuff from the Ateara house and getting a massive hug from Quil before she left, Sam was driving Olivia to Forks.
"Is it kind of hot in here now, or maybe is it just me?" Olivia asked and Sam shrugged, rolling down all of the windows quickly. "You don't feel how hot it is?" Olivia asked.
"Not really, why?" Sam asked and Olivia glanced over at him, before she was shaking her head.
"Never mind." Olivia said as she was leaning out into the wind, as her hair was flying back and she felt the cool wind rushing across her face. "Thanks for opening the windows." She said as he nodded.
"Of course, you dummy. The absolutely last thing that I need to do is, have Quil's older sister, and also my sister's best friend die of heat stroke from riding in my truck." Sam pointed out as quickly Olivia chuckled at the words and Sam smiled a little bit.
"I'm not so susceptible to heat anymore, Sam, I spend most of my days after school baking, drawing and swimming at First Beach." Olivia said and she sighed, quietly sitting back in her seat. "Am I even going to be allowed back to the reservation?" She asked and Sam looked over at her like she was going crazy.
"Are you kidding me, Olivia? Just because your parents shipped you to Charlie and because that idiot Georgia got you kicked out of school, doesn't mean that everyone hates you here at the reservation. I thought that you'd know that by now." Sam said and she looked at him. "For such a smart person, you can be real thick in the head sometimes." Sam noted and she smiled a little.
"Thanks Sammy." Olivia murmured and Sam smiled a little wider at their made-up childhood nickname, which Olivia had continued to use in private when they weren't surrounded by the others that numbered in double-digits at all times.
"I think this is it." Sam said as he signaled and turned into a driveway as Olivia was shaking her head.
"So, was it the police cruiser in the driveway that gave it away or?" Olivia was now referring to the police cruiser that was parked right in front of them in the driveway and Sam was looking at her.
"Really?" Sam asked as Olivia burst out laughing at the look on his face as she was shaking her head as she laughed so hard that she was holding her ribs. "I don't see what's so funny."
Olivia finally regained control of her own laughter and she was wiping her eyes really quick, just to clear away the tears of laughter. "Never mind. I needed that laugh, Sam, thanks." She said and she was coughing out a final laugh.
"No problem, although I still don't understand what was so funny." Sam admitted as he was reaching into the back of the truck and he pulled out a big box that was in a bag. "This is for you." He said and Olivia glanced into his face suspiciously, trying to see if a joke was in here somewhere. "I'm not a prankster in situations like these." It was true and Olivia took the box, and then she nearly dropped it.
"Jesus Sam, what in the hell is in here? Did you wrap up a ton of bricks and give them to me?" Olivia asked as Sam laughed.
"No, of course not. Besides, this isn't just a gift from me. Opal, Carmen and I, Leah and Seth, everyone chipped in, in order to buy this. Now just open it, would you?" Sam asked and Olivia's eyebrows lifted in curiosity.
Olivia was very curious about this now and she was using one of Sam's keys to slice open the top of the box and she pulled it quickly open.
There was all sorts of baking tools in the box, three full receipe books and there was also a couple of small pans. But those small pans were still extremely heavy, which Olivia was imagining as the weight.
"This is awesome." Olivia said as she was carefully now taking out, one of the three receipe books and she was flipping through it carefully. "What's the occasion though?" She asked and Sam looked at her for a minute.
"Happy birthday, Olivia." He said and Olivia groaned at the words. "I still do not understand, how you constantly can forget your birthday." Sam noted.
"Because it is just an approximation date, Sam, no one knows my real one and I always forget. Quil chose it for me, I asked him to choose a date and this was what he chose." Olivia admitted and Sam was nodding a little. "So yeah, I always forget my birthday because, I really have no reason to remember." She said rather simply.
"All right. Well, let's get your stuff unloaded, because I have homework to do." Sam noted and Olivia nodded at the words as she unlocked the door and she hopped out of the truck.
Olivia grabbed her backpack quickly and her duffle bag, which with weight combined, were still lighter than the box of all of the baking tools, which Sam took for her.
Olivia knocked on the front door and then they could hear someone coming down the stairs. They heard the door unlatching and Charlie Swan opened the door. "You must be Olivia Ateara." Charlie said at once and Olivia nodded.
"Unless you've had any other platinum blond teenagers coming from La Push to move in with you, since her adoptive parents think that she's too much work and has a really bad temper." Olivia replied and for a moment there, the two of them were just staring at each other, while Sam was waiting and holding his breath... although, he didn't quite know why.
Charlie burst out into laughter and Olivia sighed with relief at the sight of the laughter and Charlie finally got his control back. "I think that you will fit in just fine, Olivia Ateara, so come on in." He said and Olivia was smiling as she walked into the house.
"Oh right. Mr. Swan..."
"Charlie. Just call me Charlie." He said as Sam followed with the box of baking supplies.
"Right. Charlie, that's Sam Uley. He kindly volunteered himself to be my pack mule for the day." Olivia introduced and once Sam had put the baking supplies down, he was quickly shaking Charlie's hand.
Charlie recoiled from his touch and he looked at his hand, which felt like it was burning. "Hey, are you feeling okay? It feels like you are a burning fire." He said and Sam looked down at his hands in confusion.
"I feel fine." Sam said with a shrug and Olivia was getting unpacked in the room upstairs.
Sam walked upstairs as he looked around until he found the guest room upstairs and Olivia was unpacking all of her stuff. "You need anymore help?" Sam asked and Olivia turned around to look at him and she shook her head.
"No. Thanks a lot for the help and pack mule time, Sam." She said as he was laughing at the words and he was opening his arms and she walked into the offered hug.
"You okay?" Sam asked as she had jumped back and she looked at him briefly, before she held out her hand to rest on top of his as swiftly, she was pulling her hand away. "What, what's wrong?" He asked.
"You're burning up, Sam, you should probably not go to school when you're like this." She said as he looked at her as she was shaking her head. "I'm not kidding, Sam, you are burning like a hot iron." Olivia explained and quietly at the words, Sam sighed.
"I'll go home and rest, all right?" He asked and she was nodding quickly at the words. "Try to have some fun when you're not with us."
"Yeah, yeah." Olivia said as Sam was shaking his head and he was walking out of the room and Olivia could hear him going down the stairs. She heard the familiar rumble of his engine and he was driving off.
