Chapter XXIII: Mamá Marisol

[Preston's POV]

For most of the day, Adrien and I spent our time in the living room, snacking on shortbread cookies and candy and sipping glasses of milk, all while watching Christmas movies. That was how we usually spent our Christmas Day after opening presents—eating junk and watching movies until my grandpa visited for dinner.

Unlike those who spent the holidays with large families, it was just Adrien and I and our parents, as well as my grandfather. But while it wasn't a big family gathering, we were perfectly content with it just being the five of us sitting around the dinner table during the holidays.

By the time it reached around 6:30 in the evening, Dad and I briefly went back home to change into some nicer clothes, and for me to pack an overnight bag. I changed out of my hoodie and sweatpants in exchange for a black button-up shirt and black jeans, paired with a silver necklace, rings, and a matching watch that I received as a gift last year. My dad neatened up quite well himself, with a black turtleneck tucked into a pair of slacks and a black belt.

When we got back to Adrien's place, Meghan was preparing dinner in the kitchen, already dressed up in a white knit turtleneck dress and black tights, her hair done in loose curls. I instantly walked into the kitchen, standing beside Meghan as she chopped up vegetables on a cutting board.

"Need any help?" I asked. Meghan glanced up at me and smiled.

"I would love that," She said. "Why don't you wash your hands, and you can help me cut up some of these vegetables."

"Sure thing," I replied. I moved to the sink across from her and rolled my sleeves up to my elbows, quickly and thoroughly washing my hands. Once my hands were clean and dry, I joined Meghan once more, and she gave me my own cutting board and a sharp knife.

"You remember how to cut vegetables?" Meghan asked. I hummed and nodded.

"Of course. I only learned from the best." I nudged her arm with my elbow. Meghan laughed.

"Okay well, get chopping then. Just toss them into the baking dishes when you're done."

The two of us got to work with chopping the vegetables. I started with the bell peppers, slicing them into long, thinner slices. I then worked my way to the carrots, cutting them into shorter cylinders. I tossed the carrots into a separate glass baking dish, while the bell peppers were thrown into the same baking dish as the other vegetables.

"So, My parents called earlier today," Meghan broke the comfortable silence. I briefly looked up from my cutting board and looked at her with a raised brow, "You remember Leo and Marisol, don't you?"

"Yeah. I mean...I was like ten years old at the time, but I remember them," I nodded.

"Well, they are apparently joining us for dinner tonight," She replied, shoulders noticeably tense as she chopped away at the potatoes.

"Is that a bad thing?"

Meghan remained silent for a moment, before releasing a heavy sigh, "No, it's not a bad thing. It'll be good for Adrien to see his grandparents. They haven't visited in a couple of years because they're either always busy working or travelling to Spain to visit family. Even so, though, I just don't have a close relationship con mi madre. But, she treats Adrien well and absolutely adores him so I can put up with her for a few hours."

"Well, I'm sure everything will be okay. And if she talks shit to you, you know I'm not afraid to talk back," Dad cut in as he stepped into the kitchen, grabbing the pet bowls and food for Kodey, Ruby, and Shelby.
