"Oh! Mr. Legendary Hero!" Mimi calls to Mario when she sees him on her way to Boo Woods.
"Mimi. Hello." Mario's voice is nothing but polite, but it's clear he doesn't mean it.
"I know you've been working nonstop to try and find aid for the Sammer Kingdom." She explains. "How's that going?"
"It's fine." Mario is in no mood for this. "No thanks to you."
"No chance of any survivors after the void swallowed it whole, huh?" Mimi says awkwardly.
"We think there might be some who miraculously just happened to miss the memo about the tournament." Mario replies. "All we can do is hope that's not just a rumor while we work double time to make sure they have a kingdom to come back to."
"Well, I hope you pull it off." To her credit, Mimi sounds sincere.
"So do we." Mario says, then after an awkward silence, quips, "Hope you and Luigi didn't stop having fun because of me yesterday."
"Hey, I'm sorry about that, okay?" Mimi says defensively.
"Are you?" Mario challenges. "Or is this just revenge for raining on your world ending parade?"
"Hey, no!" Mimi shakes her head. "That's not what this is at all!"
"You sure about that?" Mario won't let it go. "Cause let me tell you. Seeing him choosing to stay friends with the people he conspired to destroy the world with over being my brother, that was just brilliant. So answer me this. Is it fun for you, hurting me?"
"Is this really necessary?" Mimi begs.
"Absolutely." Mario stays firm. "Funny, isn't it, how memory loss means when he gets it back, he doesn't have to feel guilty about all the things he did as Mr. L. Like how he tried to kill me three times, one of which with the Chaos Heart."
"Would you stop already?" Mimi protests.
"So tell me. What horrible thing are you two cooking up now?"
"That's between me and him." Mimi reminds him. "Not you."
Mario stops then, then relents, "You're absolutely right. Especially now that Luigi no longer has any ties to our company."
"I don't?" A new voice asks as Mr. L walks up, with Mimi looking between them.
Mario pulls out an envelope. "Got it all right here. Got a pretty hefty price for your shares too."
"I don't want it." Mr. L says immediately.
"No, of course not." Mario rolls his eyes. "You got what you wanted. Stars forbid your big brother drags you down with him again."
Mr. L says nothing to that, but Mario's not done.
"Well, here's hoping your agenda is more on the not-world-ending side of things this time, yeah?"
Then he leaves, leaving the two of them to stand there awkwardly.
"Apologies for both repeating myself and for what just happened." Mr. L finally says as they start walking away.
"Why?" Mimi asks curiously.
"He's not wrong. We did almost destroy the world."
"But he was the one who brought it up, not you. Can't blame yourself for what he says."
"Yes I can. I did try to kill him three times. Whether or not my old self would've done it or not doesn't matter. I did. However, I'm pretty sure I don't want to try again, even after what just happened. Would I have dissolved our partnership if I did?"
