Mr. L sits on his couch. "I wasn't even sure they'd find anything. But against all odds, they did. They found something on Star Hill."
Mimi sits next to him. "I know how badly you want this, knowing you could remember everything."
"I know you know." Mr. L replies. "And I know you're still terrified of what that's going to mean for all of this." He gestures around them. "Terrified that I won't want to be your friend anymore."
"You were pretty convincing." Mimi says instead. "I don't think that's something I have to worry about anymore."
"It never was." Mr. L says, not meeting her eyes.
"Then why the long face?"
"Because now I'm actually about to go looking for it up there, and now I'm scared of how I won't want any of this anymore either." Mr. L claps his hands. " But let's not forget the very real possibility there might not be anything up there at all! Nastasia could be sending me on a wild goose chase for all I know."
Mimi only nods, so Mr. L says, "Mimi.", to get her attention, before he continues, "This doesn't really have anything to do with me. Does it?"
At Mimi's outrage, Mr. L keeps talking, "This is about how you have a very important date coming up where you're going to be wearing a beautiful white dress standing next to a dreamboat in a tuxedo, when you never thought you'd be the type to settle down with anyone, let alone say yes so quickly. But you did both, and now you're scared because it means I can't be the most important person in your life anymore. Am I right?"
Mimi's blushing like mad now, but Mr. L only chuckles. "Well, rest assured I'm not upset about any of that. And back to the trek up to Star Hill, I can't in good conscience let it go unless I know for sure nothing is up there. I have to. And I will never say no to you following me incognito, so I can ask you to teleport me away at a moment's notice."
Mimi's finally able to say, "Where else would I be, lughead?"
When Mr. L and Mimi reach the map room, he calls out, "Hello! Can we come in?"
"Luigi!" Peach greets him. "Please, join us!"
Mr. L walks up to where several Toads stand around the digital map. "I take it these are everyone who figured out where I need to go?"
"Indeed. I just wanted them to show it to you like this, so you know what to expect."
"Okay!" One Toad speaks up, pushing a button. "First, this is what Star Hill looked like 18 years ago, according to the map you were given."
The digital map begins to show a three-dimensional rendering, and by the time it's finished, there's a bunch of "Oohs" and "Aaahs".
"And this." Another Toad presses another button. "Is what it looks like today."
The rendering begins to shift, until it more closely resembles the more recent map.
"We couldn't find anything on the two individual maps, but when we tried using your combined map." A third Toad presses a button, and the rendering changes once more. "We saw this." He points one finger to a spot on the map.
"If there's something up there that's been able to last 18 years, this is where it would be. It's the only consistency we've been able to find."
"Wow." Mr. L says in awe as he keeps looking at the 3D image. "You did it."
"Right from your own hands." Peach says proudly.
"So if Mr. L goes here." Mimi points to the indicated spot. "Then he may find something that will make him remember who he is?"
