The second Mr. L walks into his house, Mimi pounces, "There you are! I've been looking for you for hours! Haven't you been checking your phone?"

"Uh no, I have not." Not a lie. He turned it off so he wouldn't be distracted. "Got a big job at the racetrack, and it was all hands on deck."

"Oh really?" Mimi doesn't sound like she believes it. "Well, whatever. You're back. Whaddaya say we head into town to grab some food?"

"Actually, I just came home to grab a change of clothes." Mr. L lies on the spot.

"Don't you wear a mechanic's uniform?" Mimi asks incredulously.

"Sorry, I just wanted something clean to put on when I'm done. And I really need to get going."

"Okay..." Mimi says slowly. "Glad I caught you. Had me worried for a moment there."

She leans in to hug him, and only when she does so does Mr. L realize how much he needs it, so he hugs her tightly, letting himself forget for a moment he just lied to her.

"Everything's gonna be okay. This won't even be a thought when we're done with it. I promise."

"This is not where your game ends. Not while I'm around. Understand?"

"Mario?" Peach knocks on Mario's door, bringing him out of his flashback. "Let me in."

He knows he shouldn't, but he does anyhow, and the first thing she asks is, "We need to talk."

Mario plays dumb. "About what?"

"About the hearing still hanging over your head?"

Mario's thrown by that, "What does that matter? We have the real invoices. The charges are gonna be dropped."

"Do I need to remind you how vulnerable we are?" Peach hisses. "They froze your account with only the fake invoices as proof. If we're going to undo all that, we can't show any fear, whatsoever. We have to leave no room for doubt."

Mario plays along, "You're right. You're 100% right."

"Come on, Mimi. Where are you?"

Then when Mr. L doesn't see her, he decides to just leave, and of course that's right when she appears.

"Hey! Are you leaving?"

"Um...yeah. Thought I'd just head out and do something to blow off some steam."

"Not without me you're not." Mimi replies. "And you never told me what happened with the evidence against Wario and Bowser."

Seeing she's not gonna let him leave, Mr. L sighs, leading her to the couch.

"Mr. Hero seemed really freaked out when I ran into him." She informs him.

"You were at the castle?"

"Looking for you because you weren't at the racetrack." Mimi says pointedly. "Because I knew that information was time sensitive, and wanted to know if it made a difference in your brother's case."

"And when I didn't reach out myself, you got worried." Mr. L fills in the blank. "I'm sorry."

"Hey, you said you were working on something that needed everyone there, right?" Mimi keeps pushing him. "But put a pin in that for now. What happened?"

"Huh?" Mr. L's too stressed to know Mimi's question is only a genuine curiosity and gets defensive. "What do you mean what happened when I was at the castle?"
