Broken Luna

Chapter 5

Lucy's POV
Tanner dropped me off quickly and ensured me that I'd hear from Zach soon. Being away from him hurts, my chest tightens and I feel as if I am missing a part of myself. Luckily, tomorrow is Saturday so he may come visit me. Lucian hasn't left my side since I got home, it's like he knows despite never having felt the mate bond before. He usually sleeps at the bottom of my bed but as soon as I lay down he snuggles up next to me. The vet had told me Lucian more than likely wouldn't get a mate due to his human side dying. I am the closest thing he will ever have to a soulmate. I cried the whole day when I found him, discovering things like that can destroy you. I couldn't imagine living my entire life without a mate. I gently pet him as I close my eyes and let sleep overcome me.

Lucian's POV
Lucy finally falls asleep, I rub my head against her arm to check but it stays limp like the rest of her. I carefully get out of bed and walk downstairs before crawling through the doggy door. I always go for nightly runs when Lucy falls asleep, not much else I get to do since my human form is gone. When I lost my human part, I literally lost my other half. Being stuck like this forever, knowing I'll never get a soulmate is heartbreaking. I take my usual pathway to the crystal clear lake I found when I was younger. I sit on the rocks at the edge of the water and watch as the current flows. Some fish are visible from this spot but it looks to be only two or three tonight. I hear a twig behind me snap as I turn my head quickly and get into a defensive stance. A beautiful black wolf with bright green eyes steps out of the woods and looks towards me. We lock eyes and I feel the mate bond connect. How is this possible? She walks up next to me and rubs against my side playfully.

"Shift so I can see who you are, mate", I hear her voice through what must be a mind link.

I've never had a mind link before, I wonder if I can do this with other people. Wait did she say shift? She shifts in front of me and she is beautiful. She has long black hair and bright green eyes, everything about her is amazing. It makes me wonder what my human form would look like at my age. I'm the same age as Lucy but I haven't seen my human form since it died when I was a kid.

"Your turn handsome", she smiles at me causing me to whimper.

Why would the moon goddess give this lovely woman a mate like me, I can't even shift. I do the one thing I can think of and run away. I quickly run back home before going back to Lucy's room and curling up next to her. I can't help but cry, she would have rejected me right away if she knew I couldn't shift.

Lucy's POV
I'm awaken by a slight shaking next to me. I open my eyes to see Lucian shaking and whimpering.

I pet him gently and hold him close, "What's wrong buddy? I'm right here".

I hear a voice as if through a mind link, "I can mind link now because I found my mate. She can shift and I can't, how could she ever love me".

I lay there in shock for a moment as I process his words. I guess the vet was wrong, he can have a mate. Maybe there is also a way to get his human form back, I mean his body is still technically intact just in a different form.

"Don't cry Lucian, I'll find a way to get your human form back. I'm the future Luna of this pack so I'm sure I can get into the pack house and have access to the library. I've heard the pack house has the best history related books you can get", he nods as he slowly calms down.

I get out of bed and get dressed in black pants, a black shirt, and a black beanie. I grab a flashlight and a backpack incase I need to take some books with me. I know dressing in all black will help me not get caught sneaking around the pack house. I know I'll have to make up an excuse at the front gate but as Zach's mate I can just say I'm coming to see him. I order Lucian to stay here despite usually needing him by my side at all times. After meeting my mate, my tics have been calmer than usual. I never thought the mate bond would have an affect on my tics. I'm sure even though I will be under stress, my tics should stay calm due to the close proximity of my mate being in the same building. I nod to Lucian before leaving my house, luckily my parents have been asleep for hours. I walk around to the front gate of the pack house as the guard steps forward towards me.

"State your name and intentions now or leave the premises immediately", I raise my hands in defense.

"I'm Lucy Heart, the future Alpha's mate and I'm here to see him", his stare softens as he bows to me.

"Welcome ma'am, go in and let me know if you need anything", I smile happily and walk past him as the gate opens.

I'm so glad that worked. I walk into the pack house before quickly observing my surroundings and just as I had expected, no inside guards. I look up and attempt to read the signs in the dark, one says the library is to the left so I start my adventure to the left. I get about half way down the hallway when I see the door at the end start to creak open.
