Grian paused as he glanced up at the house in front of him before looking back at the door. He checked his pockets quickly to make sure that his mask was still there before hesitantly reaching out and ringing the doorbell.
There was a slight pause, followed by the sound of an odd thud from the other side of the door- as if someone had fallen off of something- before the door opened to reveal Pearl.
She looked a lot more relaxed than most of the times he had seen her- her hair was tied up in a messy ponytail, and she was wearing a hoodie and pyjama pants (clearly she hadn't had a very busy day).
Her confused expression was immediately replaced with a sympathetic one as she glanced between the look on Grian's face and the very heavy bag slung over his shoulder. Pearl smiled wryly. "Okay, something bad's happened. Come in."
Grian nodded awkwardly, stepping inside as Pearl moved out of the way. He paused as he spotted Gem sitting on one of the couches (there were two facing each other) with a mildly surprised expression. Oh, right. He'd almost forgotten about Gem and Pearl being roommates.
The ginger haired woman glanced at Pearl as she closed the front door behind them, almost having a silent conversation with her, before nodding and smiling at Grian. "Hey, Grian! What, uh- why are you... here?" She said awkwardly as he and Pearl sat down on the couch facing her.
Pearl shot him a knowing look and sighed. "You got kicked out by your roommates, didn't you?"
Grian turned to stare at her, attempting to form words before saying, "Uh... yes, but-" He squinted at her suspiciously. "How did- you- know... that?" The dirty blonde added quietly.
The blue eyed woman grinned. "It's all a matter of deduction, mate. Based on the fact that your hero roommate just found out you're a villain, the unnecessarily heavy bag you're carrying-" Grian reluctantly dropped the bag on the couch next to him. "-and just- your face, it wasn't hard to figure out." She added in a slightly softer tone of voice. Pearl paused before adding, "Why'd you come here?"
"Well- I just- didn't know where else to go." Grian admitted in a voice that was much quieter than his normal voice.
Pearl smiled. "Well, that's sweet. Is it also because you didn't have anyone else's address?"
"Well- partially." Grian said begrudgingly. "But mostly for the first reason. I didn't expect Scar to just- kick me out like that. I knew he'd want space, but..." He shrugged, looking away from Pearl.
Pearl paused and he glanced back at her again to see her turn to Gem and mouth something silently. When Gem nodded after a thoughtful pause, she spoke again, smiling. "Well... if you really have nowhere else to go... would you like to stay here?" What? Is she- He frowned slightly, glancing over his friend for any sign that she was joking.
"Are you... being serious?" The dirty blonde asked quietly.
"Yeah! What, did you think I was just gonna chat with you, go 'oh man that sucks, anyway' and just kick you back out into the street?" Pearl queried skeptically.
"Well- I don't know." Grian said with a shrug.
Gem laughed. "We're your friends, Grian. Besides, we have a spare room and you can stay there. It's not like you're causing any problems or anything." She added softly as he pulled a face.
"Are you sure?" He asked, still frowning slightly. That's kinda- a big thing to just say 'oh you can live here' when you've only known me a few months. Very- nice of them, but-
"Hell yeah, dude." Pearl said with a yawn, leaning back against the couch. "I'll show you the spare room in a bit if you'd like- guess it's your room now, though." She added with a grin.
Grian nodded slowly. "So I can- stay here?" He said with a thoughtful expression.
"For Void's sake, Grian- yes, you can stay here. As long as you need to." Pearl said with a grin.
Grian nodded again, a smile forming on his face for the first time during the conversation. "Well- I- thank you. That's..."
Gem waved her hand in a dismissive gesture. "Don't worry about it! Oh, by the way, Pearl-" Grian zoned out slightly as Pearl and Gem (his new roommates, he supposed) launched into a conversation- presumably the conversation they had been having before he arrived.
He was- very surprised at how that conversation had went. Despite Pearl joking about it, the parrot hybrid had absolutely expected Pearl to be sympathetic for a few minutes and then- send him on his way.
Grian wasn't sure why he had thought that admittedly- maybe because he'd just lost a lot of faith in two of his friends and was uncertain as to whether it would happen with the others- but the conversation had definitely gone much better than he'd thought it would.
He smiled again as he glanced between Pearl and Gem, who were now playfully insulting each other over something to do with their conversation.
Even though he had definitely lost a few friends that day, he was- incredibly grateful for the ones he still had.
He was going to be a lot more careful from now on, though. If Scar and Mumbo were really his friends, he was almost certain that they still would have cared about him even though he was a villain.
Grian was also sure that he was definitely not going to hold back next time he encountered Scar in the hero/villain world.
But for now, he could relax in the company of his new roommates by their fireplace and try to forget what had happened today.
He knew he'd have to face Scar again someday, but today was not that day.
