Y/n P.O.V"Well honey, I don't know what to tell you. I can't afford to buy you a car and I can't afford to send you through driver's ed right now. We just got back from vacation, you just have to wait." I huffed.
"Mom, I'm 17! All my friends can drive AND all the popular people have cars and drivers licenses, and I'm the loser without one."
"At least you know you're a loser." Erica mocked back to me. I spun around and glared at her.
"I will kill you." She backed away from me, smirking as my mom interjected.
"No killing, no cars and no whining please. I just want to sit and relax for an hour." She walked off to the sun room. Was I being dramatic? Maybe. Was it justified? Absolutely. I cannot be the loser in school for another year because I'm the only one who can't drive.
"Who's getting killed and who's not getting a car?" Lucas asked walking into the kitchen, Steve Harrington following closely behind with Dustin and Max.
"I'm not getting a car, can't say no one is getting killed." Lucas laughed, knowing I had threatened Erica's smart ass again.
"Do you even know how to drive Y/n?" Dustin asked. I tilted my head towards him.
"Of course I know how to drive, it's easy." Erica then let out a large laugh.
"No you don't, you've never driven a day in your life."
"So? You press the gas and turn the steering wheel, how hard can it be?" Steve then let out a laugh.
"You know, let's test it. Y/n you can drive my car." My eyes widened as I looked at him.
"Really??" I asked with enthusiasm.
"Yeah of course, if it's as easy as you say go for it." He dangled the keys out in front of me and before I could catch up, my feet were already running towards the car.
"Slow down Y/n, we're all joining you!" Steve said behind me. I sat in the drivers seat and smiled, rubbing my hands along the steering wheel. I let out a breath and took a minute to look around. Steering wheel, shifter knob thing, gas gauge, speedometer, ignition. Easy as pie.
Steve, Lucas, Max and Dustin joined me shortly. The kids sitting in the back and Steve sitting next to me. He looked at me and smiled.
"Alright smarty pants, start her up." I placed the keys in the ignition and felt the car rumble to life. Hell yeah.
"See? I'm a natural." Steve looked at my sideways before shaking his head.
"You started that car.. an infant could start the car. But hey if you want to be proud of yourself for that, you do it." He poked my arm and made the same face my grandma would make at me when I was 5... and learning how to not over fill my orange juice cup.
I let out a huff and grabbed the shifter knob, I tried to move it but it felt stuck. Maybe a little more force. I yanked on it harder yet still nothing.
"Aye easy on the car!" Steve yelled as I let go of the shifter. "You have to press on the brake first, then you can shift." I nodded.
"Oh yeah, I knew that." He squinted his eyes at me and smirked. Okay try # 2. My foot hit the brake and I shifted the car into R. Reverse. Easy peasy lemon squeezy. I took my foot off the brake and hit the gas, violently the car took off backwards.
"WOAH WOAH WOAH!!!" I heard from the back seat before I slammed my foot on the brake. Everyone hit the back of their seat as the car stopped abruptly.
"Okay, nice and gentle on the gas pedal. We don't need to travel at the speed of light... ok?" I looked over at Steve and nodded, a little nervous. I shifted the car into D, drive. Maybe forward would be a bit easier. Wrong.
