"Stay put, Aru. Do not move," My fingers clenched firmly around the vibrant folds of her lehenga.
"By the heavens, Nitya! My patience is wearing thin," she exclaimed, hands firmly planted on her hips. "I thoroughly inspected the lehenga, everything was fine, and yet, this zipper has chosen this very moment to betray me."
Struggling with the stubborn zipper that repeatedly snagged in the middle, I grew desperate. "Hold it for a moment, Aru," I searched the room for any semblance of wax or oil that could lend aid.
My eyes fell upon a candle perched atop the cabinet. I snatched it.
Returning to Arushi, I gripped the candle tightly and rubbed the wax onto the zipper, making sure its surface became slick and slippery. I tried pulling the zipper upward again. To my relief, it smoothly glided along its track this time.
"It is finished," I replaced the candle to its original position.
"Is it truly?" Aru inquired, scrutinizing it once more. "It is indeed finished!" A radiant smile spread across her face. "But what about my blouse?"
"Worry not, Aru. I have safeguarded it with a pin. It is secure."
She hugged me with joy. "I was completely stressed out. I don't know how I would've managed this without you."
"Come on, you can't be this grateful over a zipper," I said, hugging her back.
She gently pulled away from our hug and shifted her attention to the mirror, giving herself a once-over to make sure her outfit was flawless.
"I must make my way downstairs." Adjusting her dupatta, she continued, "Nitya, could you please gather all the items and return them to the kit?"
I surveyed the chaotic scene in front of me: the dressing table and bed were covered with scattered makeup and various items. In our quest to fix her lehnga, we rummaged through the kit, unintentionally adding to the mess.
"Alright, I'll take care of this mess. You go ahead," I assured her.
"Once you finish, join us downstairs," she hastily instructed before swiftly departing from the room.
I gathered up every item scattered across the dressing table and transferred them to the bed.
I couldn't help but stare at the stuff sitting on the dressing table, the exact things Adwait had given me downstairs. There was my favorite chocolate bar and a cute little bunny plush.
My mind wandered back to that encounter in the car, just a couple of weeks back. The memory was still crystal clear like it had just happened a minute ago.
I thought that by keeping my distance, those unsettling emotions stirring inside me would eventually fade away. But I was wrong. Instead, it only seemed to fuel this restless feeling within me.
