I squinted, feeling something softly tickling my cheeks. I turned my head, trying to shake it off, but it wouldn't go away. Slowly, I opened my eyes and saw strands of hair scattered across my face.
I looked down and a soft smile played on my lips. Nitya was curled up in my arms, sleeping peacefully.
A contented sigh slipped out of me. Could there be a more beautiful morning than this?
I carefully brushed the strands of hair from her face, soaking in the quiet magic of the moment.
"I don't know how many mornings I'll have to wait to wake up with you in my arms, but seeing you like this makes me want to whisk you away, far from the world's prying eyes," I whispered, gently kissing her forehead.
I gently stroked her cheeks, quietly hoping for a day when I could wake her up with a soft touch, wrap her in a hug, and stroll through the garden together.
I glanced at the clock. It was just 4 in the morning. Despite barely getting an hour of sleep after our long conversation through the night, I didn't feel the least bit tired.
Why, you ask? Because there, before me, was the woman clinging to my shirt, peacefully asleep, her lips gently parted.
I slipped my finger under her chin to gently nudge her mouth close all the while pulling her even closer to me in the process.
I sighed with a tinge of sadness, "I need to go, my love, though my heart rebels against the idea," I expressed, even though the words fell upon ears that couldn't hear me.
I peppered her face with kisses, and a serene smile graced her features. "Adwait," she whispered. still lost in sleep.
"Yes, love?" I whispered, but she was silent, lost in her dreams.
Holding back a sigh, I carefully lifted myself from the bed, making sure to cover her up. Before leaving, I leaned in and placed a soft kiss on her forehead.
I headed toward the balcony. I needed to leave quickly before anyone noticed, especially her parents.
As I neared the threshold, about to slip through the grills, a thought lodged itself in my mind, stopping me in my tracks.
"Damn it. How could I forget?" I quickly turned back to the room.
The previous night, she had confided her insecurities in me, and leaving without a word would be a carelessness too significant to overlook.
I would make sure that my actions would never worsen her insecurities or provoke unnecessary overthinking from now on.
Retrieving paper and pen from her study table, I quickly crafted a note.
Good morning, Jaan. I'm sorry for slipping away without waking you, but I was worried about your parents discovering me and didn't want to disturb your much-needed rest after our late-night chat. I'll catch up with you at the university, and since our night date didn't include dinner, breakfast is on me.
I love you.
