Say Bye-Bye

My Pov

"Get back here!" I yelled while chasing the wild Butterfree I had caught sight of. It wasn't a normal Butterfree. It was a Shiny Butterfree! I could tell because its body was a mulberry color, its eyes were green and its paws and feet were pink. It was a persistent little butterfly. "Zippy, Thunder Shock! Free, Gust!"

"Free!" Free exclaimed, flapping his wings and created a large tempest of wind.

"Pika...chu!" Zippy exclaimed, shooting a lightning bolt at the Butterfree. Right before the attacks hit it, a green bubble appeared around it and deflected the attack.

"No way!" I said.

"Free!" Free said.

"Pika!" Zippy said. The Butterfree, angry, turned around and used Whirlwind. Zippy, Free and I tried to stand our ground, but we got blown back. By the time we regained our footing, the Butterfree was too far away. I noticed it take a glance at Free before flying off and disappearing into the forest.

"Damn!" I yelled. I plopped on the grass and fell onto my back. It was the first time I missed a catch and it was frustrating.

"Pika..."

"Free.." I looked at Zippy and Free and they seemed just as upset as I was, but I think they thought I was upset at them. I sat up and patted their heads.

"It's okay, boys. I didn't count on a wild Pokémon knowing Protect." I said. I got to my feet, dusted myself off and we headed back. I had spotted the Butterfree so fast that I basically leapt off of my bike, causing it to fall over. Lovie had managed to jump out of the basket and in my rush to get Zippy and Free's PokéBalls, I have let everyone else out. I had told them to stay by my bike and that I being back in a minute. I hope I didn't scare them. As I got back to the road, I saw all my Pokémon waiting by my bike. They all ran up to me.

"Vui!" Lovie cried.

Mankey!" Primo exclaimed.

"Paras!" Dot cried.

"Poli!" Tad cried.

"Hey, everyone. Sorry I took off like that." I said, kneeling down and petting each of them. I inspected my bike to make sure I didn't break anything. It looked like it was okay. The way I flew off this thing, you'd think I created the move Fling three gens early. I returned everyone but Lovie to their PokéBalls. I sat my bike up and Lovie hopped into the basket. I was heading back from Pewter City after doing two things; reviving my Helix Fossil and making a trade. Now, I have an Omanyte and Mr. Mime. Professor Oak was excited about observing their behaviors. I had just made it through Mt. Moon when I spotted that Shiny Butterfree.

"Vui vui..." Lovie squeaked, seeing I was frustrated.

"It's okay Lovie. We'll catch the next one." I said. After a couple of days, I managed to make my way back to Cerulean City and headed toward Vermillion City. I hoped Ash hadn't gotten ahead of me. The whole way to Vermillion City, I felt like something was following me. Maybe it was the Shiny Butterfree coming for a rematch. I shook the thought out of my head. I got to a small hill and saw Vermillion City in the far distance. "Almost there." I went to turn around, but came face-to-face with the same Shiny Butterfree.

"Free!" It flapped its wings to release Whirlwind again. I quickly pedaled out of the way and got around it. It must be mad. I was about to send out Zippy, but one of them let their self out on their own. The light faded away to reveal Free.

"Free?" I asked.

"Free free!" Free exclaimed. He wanted to fight it? That was strange. Maybe this was a male and it felt like Free imposed on his territory.

"Okay then. Lovie, stay back." I said.

"Vui!" she answered. The Butterfree again used Whirlwind.

"Free, use Confusion and send it back!" I said. Free's eyes glowed red and the funnel of wind froze before it went back and hit the Shiny Butterfree. The Butterfree's eyes glowed blue before sending a barrage of blue waves towards us. That was Psywave! Free got hit dead on and got knocked down to the ground.

"Free, are you okay?" I asked. Free, despite being very injured, flapped his wings and was back in the air. The Butterfree once again shot Psywave at Free. That's when Free's eyes glowed white and then rainbow-colored rings shot from them. That was Psybeam! The attacked not only countered Psywave, but it pushed the attack and hit the Butterfree. The Shiny Butterfree fell to the ground. I was about to throw a PokéBall, when Free flew in front of me. "Free?"

"Free free free! Free!" he exclaimed. Free flew toward my bag and pulled out a Super Potion.

"Okay. I get it." I said, taking the medicine from him. I sprayed the medicine on the Butterfree and it perked right up. It then looked at Free and started swaying back and forth while singing. Wait, that was a courtship dance! So this Butterfree was a female. I thought back to when it had glanced at Free before flying out the first time. Was that why the Butterfree came back? Because it saw Free as a potential mate? That's when Free started mimicking the Butterfree. I knew it. Free and the Shiny Butterfree flew down to my level.

"Free. Free free!" Free said. I know what Free was trying to tell me. He wants to go with this Butterfree.

"I understand Free. But... can we spend the rest of the day together? As a way of saying good-bye and good luck." I requested. Free looked at the Shiny Butterfree, that I decided to refer to as Calli. So, I explained to everyone that Free was going to leave and start a family. So, me and all my Pokémon played around and even befriended Calli. I had even snapped a picture of all of us. Before long, I noticed the sun was setting.

"Free!" Calli called. She flew up into the sky. Free looked at me. I dug through my bag and found a red bandana. I tied it around Free's neck.

"There. Maybe, one day, we'll each other again. This way, I'll know it's you right away." I said.

"Free..." Free said, his eyes growing sad. I hugged him the best I could without damaging his wings. All of my other Pokémon nuzzled or hugged Free too. Free flew up to his mate and they began to fly toward the ocean, to cross it to where they'd have their babies. I waved good-bye, trying to hold in tears. I hadn't felt like this since my mom had passed away.

"Vui vui!" Lovie called out, waving one of her paws.

"Mankey!" Primo called out, drawing out his call and waving good-bye.

"Pikachu!" Zippy called out, waving good-bye.

"Paras para!" Dot called out, waving one of her small pincers.

"Poli!" Tad called out, swaying his tail.

"You be safe out there Free! I hope we'll meet again. Good-bye Free! I love you!" I called out.

"Free!" Free called out. His call seemed to echo through the air as he and Calli disappeared into the twilight sky. I finally couldn't hold it in and sunk to the ground, letting tears fall into the grass.

I understand I released Free a lot earlier than Ash released his Butterfree in the anime, but I set it up to where it was a chance encounter. I'm sorry if you all don't agree with me doing this. Also, Calli is short for Callicarpa dichotoma, or purple beautyberry.
