TIME WAS A CRUEL ENEMY, probably one of the most terrifying ones.
Law had fought it so many times and still, this fight was different from all the other ones.
Never before, he had wished for time to freeze, never before, he had cursed the dawn of the day like he did in these moments.
He felt happy for the first time in forever, but it was a bitter happiness.
His head turned, slightly, slowly, to rest his eyes on Luffy next to him, surrounded by grass and flowers, coated in sunlight.
It warmed him more than the sun ever could.
When he once more realized that this would be the last time he'd spend time on this meadow, he turned his gaze towards the lake again, felt the warmth in him turn into burning acid.
To his misfortune, the avertion of his eyes didn't go unnoticed by the good intuition of the strawhat.
“You will sail off this evening, won't you?”
To hear it from him almost made Law's heart break.
He wished he could tell him that he'd stay another day, another week, another month, an entire life.
But he couldn't. His crew waited for him to continue sailing, they had bared with his selfishness for long enough.
So he only nodded, not trusting his voice to be stable.
Luffy sat up, leaned in towards him and buried his face in the crook of his neck, softly running his nose over the skin.
When he suddenly pulled it between his lips and started creating a hickey, a gasped chuckle left Law's lips.
As soon as the younger pirate pulled back and he rose his gaze towards him, the burning sensation in Law's abdomen softened a little.
“It's okay for you to go, you know? I've kept you here long enough and you've helped me more than enough.”
Law bit the inside of his lip at the lump forming in his throat, tried to swallow around it, tried to ignore the pain it brought along.
In the end, he just breathed out a low “I know”, before he rose a hand to Luffy's face, caressed the soft cheekbone beneath his thumb.
“I'm just not sure I can leave you to yourself.”
Luffy smiled and pushed a kiss against his lips, so sweet and loving that it broke a sigh from Law.
“Once I'm done with my training, I'll find you in the new world.”
Law rose a brow at that, in an attempt to seem unbothered, an attempt to ignore the sting in his throat.
