33.| I don't want to know who we are without each other

Older Roger, John, Brian, and Freddie went in one car whilst the younger ones and Y/N went in hers. It used to be Gloria's and she thought what would happen to it after she went back. Both cars were silent and for very different reasons.

The first one was because they were enjoying Freddie's presence for one last time and answered his occasional questions; the second, was because they were all too tense. What if it went wrong? Some thought about maybe dying. The thought of disintegrating and wandering around somewhere he doesn't know as a molecule was nudging him.

A brunette that Y/N had met before, Kate, held the back door of the physical institute open for them. She was wearing a short sequin dress in emerald green, her hair was loose and her makeup slightly smudged. Her heels made her even taller and she clearly had been dragged out of a party. Noah and Rachel were also there, but already in the classroom with the equipment they were using; all dressed up as well.

"I'm so sorry," Y/N mumbled when she walked past Kate, who managed to smile at her. Y/N was the last one to enter the building. They followed older Brian to the classroom in silence. Roger slowed his pace until she was by his side.

"It's an abject failure!" Noah mocked the dean's voice when he suspended the project. Noah was helping Brian May with the research for almost four years now. Rachel laughed but stopped when Brian opened the door and greeted them with a good night. They were all aware of the situation, Brian explained it to Noah over the phone and he explained it to Rachel and Kate.

"Sorry for cutting your celebration short," Brian sighed.

"We're happy just to be part of it," Noah replied.

Rachel looked at him, she didn't match his excitement. She likes her major, yes, but she'll never be able to discuss whatever happens tonight. Plus, Brian only wanted them to help him get into the institute. She'll have no memory of it n the next day.

"Thank you," Brian smiled.

Y/N caught the moment Rachel glanced at Noah and decided that she should get the car. She just didn't know how to give it to her.

The room is a big space full of technological devices, a large whiteboard on one of the walls, and some physics-related posters. There are some bookshelves lined side by side, filled with folders in different colors and plastic boxes. It looked more like a warehouse than a classroom, Y/N wondered if that is what the place actually is.

However, it was impossible to not look at the device: a circular form, around one meter in diameter, on top of a metal platform. There are smaller devices inside it, created to conduct and externalize the molecules so it's possible to create a magnetic field. Now Brian can finally understand Gloria's drawing. He called his younger self and started talking to Noah, they were in front of his computer and older Brian pointed at something.

It's needless to say that Noah was scared he might pass out.

Kate opened the door and gave Rachel a lab coat and sneakers, her mood seemed to instantly improve and she thanked Kate.

Y/N was about to talk to Rachel and Roger gently grabbed her by the wrist. She stops walking and turns to him.

"Hi," she whispers and a smile appears on her lips.

"Hi," he smiles back and takes a step forward. "Can I talk to you outside?"

Y/N looked over her shoulder. Brians and Noah were making the final arrangements to create the closest-to-perfect-condition; older Roger, John, Deaky, and Freddie were chatting. Deaky's condition was starting to scare everyone and Freddie was trying to hide the fact that he was feeling weak again.
