23 YEARS LATER:
┄۫─۪╌◌⃘໋࣭ٜ❀⃘̸࣭ٜ◌໋╌۪─۫┄The most common thing in the world is people who will never meet each other. They were born too far from one another and chance won't make them cross paths. A waste. Many of these encounters destined not to happen could have been rapturous. By affinity, by attraction that cannot be explained, by force of circumstances, by occult chemistry, who can know? A lot of love is lost in this lack of synchrony. You don't have to go far, someone could pass on the left while we look distractedly to the right. By a hair the parallel forces us to the eternal mismatch. It takes coincidence for love to settle in. There is a certain miracle in encounters. It is not foolish to say that love is sacred.
Roger drove for hours to get to a place that had never crossed his mind until Freddie mentioned it. He hopes it's not too late.
When Freddie mentioned fireworks on Christmas Eve, a memory struck Roger's mind. He had been visiting moments with Y/N in his mind for years, but somehow that one never appeared. They were at the dinner table and Freddie's kids were playing with Brian's in the living room. Veronica, John's wife, just entered the kitchen, and the trade full of cookies was empty. And maybe it was a higher force doing because Roger left the room so quickly that he would have knocked the cookies to the ground.
He didn't want to leave, but he felt that he needed to.
It would be the last time he'd ever allow himself to think about her. This time he wouldn't break this vow.
Y/N never forgot their promise: "If anything goes wrong, like, we don't end up at the same spot, I think this should be our rendezvous place. I don't know what time it is, but we can meet each other here on the 24th of December, just before midnight".
She left the house every December 24th and walked up to the barn. It was so different now, people got together and turned it into a communal space, and some parties happened there from time to time.
She decided to stay there for longer this time. Y/N isn't the one late this time, it's Roger. It's almost one in the morning when she decides enough time has passed and she has to go back home.
Waiting for Roger never made her put her life on hold. She became a successful screenwriter and director. Y/N might have stolen a few ideas from the future, but it worked and her consciousness stopped feeling heavy after a while.
However, no one else ever felt right. How can one settle with 'okay' after meeting extraordinary?
Roger was climbing the small heel to the barn and Y/N was walking back to the house, hoping that Gloria's kids are asleep because she doesn't want to explain where she went.
Their eyes lock and she hesitates for a moment.
He can't believe she was there, he waited for what feels like ages.
Roger covers the distance between them, his face twitched from one expression to another. Hope kindled a light in his eyes.
"Is it true?"
Holding his gaze, Y/N approached him.
"It is true," she said very softly.
Roger released a breath. A smile pulled at his mouth, and he stroked a thumb over her cheek. His world lights up to full brightness. The contact is like a static shock, a spark of energy where skin meets skin.
So much love is filling her chest, it may explode.
The night's warm, shy, barely touching their skin. It envelops them, entwines them, and fills them with something that can only be described as recognition. When Y/N looked at him, Roger smiled. That roguish smile that teased at one corner of his mouth. Now he was older, it made his cheek crease in a way that somehow only served to make him more beautiful.
His fingers drift down her jaw, and Y/N flushes with a dizzy heat. She raised her head to meet the kiss, and Roger cradled her face in both hands as if he were framing a portrait. And even though they knew each other by heart, the strength of this embrace felt new.
He kisses her slowly, tenderly, so that her heart creaks open so that all those moments that happened so many years ago rise to the surface and become real again. Once, Roger wondered if she ever existed. Now, she's, finally, finally, in his arms again.
They break the kiss, their breathing is loud, fast, in sync.
"You're here," she whispers, barely getting the words out before her mouth lands hard and urgent on his. The words fly out of her mouth, and loop around his heart. Roger knows what she's saying, he feels it too.
Y/N feels the unrestrained emotion in his lips, feel it unburying, unleashing something in her, something daring and fearless and winged. She's finally ending a part of her life and beginning something that has been promised years ago. It's not an epilogue, it's the start of a brand-new story.
She didn't think it was possible, but he drew her even closer into him.
They are 'Brancusi's The Kiss'. One of the most romantic sculptures ever made: a man and a woman pressed together into one.
And just like that, they chose each other again and again. And for as long as it's permitted, they'll spend days learning who they became when away from each other and how great they're together. The families they built became one.
But not now. Now, she breaks the kiss and smiles. He's here.
Y/N's about to say something, but the Christmas lights allowed her to see life amid so much sky.
A butterfly.
Roger is about to lean in and kiss her again, but she moves her face away and nods at the small creature. Roger looks over his shoulder, and his hand finds Y/N's waist.
The butterfly swims into the air, letting it eddy beneath her wings, curling in the sweetest of swirls. They watch her pass, fast despite her erratic path, choosing her direction by a silent serenade of the blooms. A storm ravages their hearts.
Finally together. And it all began in the year of 2017.
