"I know just what you need!" Damien had said weeks ago after a slight argument, "We just need to go on vacation!" I remember staring at him in disbelief and surprise. But he continued to stare at me with those kind, loving brown eyes.
I willingly agreed.
What I did not know, was that the vacation I'd be spending with Damien was going to involve the woods and a tent. I had imagined Paris or maybe even another trip to where his mother lived. I thought about that place a lot. But I couldn't argue much, as it was a nice tent with nice cots. Damien had even brought a fan to help cool us from the heat. And the view was nice, and when you stepped out of the tent, the lake was right there. Plus I didn't have to do any of the heavy lifting, as Damien had control of it. It felt weird seeing him in shorts and a t-shirt, sweating beading up on his forehead. He wiped it away and smiled over at me, "What are you thinking, my love?"
I only smiled, trying to wipe the knot that was tying itself in my belly. I was honestly worried about what this vacation was going to do for us, and about what was lurking in the woods at night. I swallowed hard and turned back to the sun that was still high up in the sky, "Just waiting to get into this damn lake." He laughed and turned back to the tent, tying it down into the ground. Damien then stood back, hands on his hips with a smile, staring proudly at his work. He then looked back over at me and gestured to the tent, "Well, are you going to get your suit on or just sit there and be pretty?" I blushed slightly and stood up from the fairly large rock I was sitting on and entered the tent, with Damien not to fair behind. I only packed a week's worth of clothes -though we were only going to be here for the weekend. I didn't want any surprises.
I felt Damien's eyes on my back.
"Do you need something?" I laughed.
He swallowed hard, then allowing his eyes to come up and connect with my own. He brought himself closer and kissed me, throwing a hand onto my waist. Damien then moved his lips to my neck and I had to use a hand to push him away with a laugh, "We are not doing this out here!"
"Come on!" He laughed with a plead, "We're out in nature! How romantic is that?"
I rolled my eyes and gave him another kiss before we dropped the conversation and changed into our suits.
"There's a dock further down that we can jump from." Damien pointed out as we stepped out of the tent. I said nothing and followed behind him in his chosen direction. We travelled the couple of feet hand-in-hand.
I watched as Damien jumped off of the dock, then plunging into the water below. When he broke the surface, he howled in joy as he flopped onto his back and floated along. I sat down on the dock and smiled at him, not being able to push this aching pressure in my chest. He pushed himself towards me, reaching his hands out to me as he called me to jump in with him. I smiled and shook my head, "I'm sure it's freezing!"
"No, no!" He laughed as he slightly splashed me, "It feels wonderful! Jump in!"
I placed a hand over my chest and pushed on it, thinking it would stop the pressure that was growing in my chest and lungs. Damien looked worried for a moment, his eyes wide with concern as he tried to get out of the lake. I jumped in before he could, the warmish water flowing over my skin and hair. I rose to the surface and pulled myself into Damien's arms. He smiled brightly, brushing the stray, wet hairs from my face. He then kissed my forehead and cupped my face, "Are you feeling okay?"
"Yes, darling." I grinned, thought I was lying, "I am perfect."
We talked and swam for hours as it felt, watching the sun lower itself to the ground and the stars to follow behind it. The feeling in my chest had spread to my body, making me feel weak and caused my joints to hurt. I'm sure I had a fever at this point, but I didn't want to worry Damien. It was just the flu after all. Damien had made us some burgers on the campfire -and he even brought out some marshmallows for afterwards. I wasn't really in the mood since that cot was calling my name. But I ate my burger anyways and made a smore or two. Damien couldn't stop smiling. Maybe we really did need this vacation.
We both brushed out teeth using a spare water bottle and kissed each other goodnight. It only took moments for Damien to fall asleep soundly. I found myself restless. I was hot and then cold. My body ached and my chest soared with pain. Maybe I just needed some water. I carefully leaned out of the cot, thankfully not awaking Damien. I picked up Damien's backpack and began digging through it, trying to find anything to soothe my throat. I then found something that seemed out of shape and pulled it out. I sighed and fell back on my butt, smiling at it.
It was my engagement ring box. He brought it with us.
I opened it just to look at it again, the diamond glinting against the moonlight. Damien the shuffled behind me, and I panicked as I snapped the box shut. I looked over at him, studying his face. He was still asleep. I released a pent up breath, then choking on something in my chest. I covered my mouth and rushed out of the tent. I made sure to get a good distance away before I started to cough, trying to remove the pressure from my lungs. I coughed so much, my throat and chest became sore. I doubled over and pulled my hand from my mouth, revealing blood pooled in my palm. My eyes widened for a moment as I stared down at it. A voice then called out to me, and I turned to them.
Damien stood behind me, body shaking with wide eyes. He stared at me for an extended period of time before he rushed to my side and grabbed me in his arms, "We're going to the hospital."
