Today was Damien's birthday. Although he had told me multiple times not to do anything special, I refused to listen. Birthday's were my thing, and I was going to make sure this was his best birthday possible! Cory had also told me not to do anything, since Damien had something planned for tonight. But after a little bit of begging and convincing, he finally agreed. And we had probably turned it into a bigger deal than it was. I had only planned on getting a cake, and some gifts he had been eyeballing for a while -Damien didn't like buying things for himself, he was a gift giver. But Cory had evolved it into something even bigger! Cakes and goodies, a couple little drinking games, balloons and streamers and even invited a couple friends from the business -like Chase and Lixian. I knew Damien wasn't too fond of crowds so I didn't want too many people in fear of stressing him out on his big day.

I watched as Cory pulled the red velvet cake from the oven and placed it onto the counter to cool, then wiping his brow to remove the sweat that had beaded across it. "Alright," Cory had announced breathlessly, "Let that cool and then you can decorate it. And then that gives me time to finish up the main course."

"What about the decorations?" I questioned. I glanced back down to the checklist that was in my grasp. We were already behind our planned schedule, but there was a hope that Damien was going to be coming here late, like he had done prior this week. The reason was unknown, but I had decided to not question it. Damien was loyal and I knew he had other responsibilities that weren't just dependent on me.

Cory rested on the barstool to relax his feet for a moment before he decided to answer, "I thought Chase was going to do that?"

"No, no." I sighed and flipped to the page in my checklist, turning and pointing to show Cory what I had already marked down, "No, Chase is in charge of the refreshments and that one little card game everyone dies for when he brings it."

"Then who was supposed to bring the decorations?"

I rolled my eyes and scanned the page, then previously viewing what I had written down.

Party Decorations - Celine Fischbach

I looked at it again, thinking I had just imagined it. But it was actually there, written in my handwriting, plain as day. I quickly scribbled it out and slapped the notepad back down, standing onto my feet as I ran my fingers through my hair, "I'll do it, I just I forgot to assign it to someone. I'll get started on that really quick!" Cory watched with concern as I quickly left the kitchen. I had the decorations hidden in the old nursery, thinking that Damien wouldn't go in there. There was no use for the room now anyways, and we just hadn't found the time -or the heart- to clean it out. I swiftly pulled them from the forgotten closet and rested the box on my hip, then locking the door once I had exited.

Chase had arrived with a cooler full of soda and booze, along with a basket full of card games he had. It was way more than what I had asked for, but that's okay, I'm sure no one would mind. Lixian had also arrived with some snacks and party favors -like hats, kazoos and confetti poppers. I noticed a couple more coworkers, ones that I had already forgotten the name of. But they all wore smiles as they stood around waiting for Damien's arrival. I tried not to hold eye contact with anyone as I wanted to finish these decorations as soon as possible. I grabbed a nearby chair and quickly stood on top of it as I began to hang up the banner and streamers. It wasn't before I felt a hand placed onto the back of my thigh. I jumped and looked down, seeing a smiling Chase. I smiled back down at him, silently thanking him for giving me a stable support. He continued to sip on his beer as he looked out into the living room, "No Damien yet?" I shook my head and finished tacking up the banner, then stepping down from the chair, "I'm sure he'll be here shortly."

"I heard you were in the hospital, how are you feeling?"

I jerked my head up and stared at him, reading his concerned face. It was the same one Damien held when he looked at me. His hand rested on my forearm as he gently caressed it with his thumb. I smiled and calmly pulled myself from his grip to grab the box, "I'm good, I'm much better now." He smiled once more before taking another sip from his beer and drifting off into the living room. I ended up staring at the back of his head before snapping myself out of the trance.
