(A/N: So the kids are fairly young in this one. Torin is around 14, Melody and Cassian are 13 and Lydia is around 8. Basically after they left Mystic Falls, they had no contact with it and didn't go back etc. Praesidium also means protection. Hope you enjoy. XxD)

It got warmer when she slid her arms around him.

The sun was shining through the clouds as Niklaus stood on the roof of the compound, a canvas and easel set up as he painted away, not a clean spot left on his palette. At least until he felt a familiar pair of arms wrap around his torso and a sweet scent envelop his senses as his brush paused and he leaned into her, his eyes closed, content.

"I will admit," Isa's voice said, just as warm as the sun that shone down on them. "The roof is a peculiar place for you to become inspired, my love."

Niklaus smiled. "But it is hardly the strangest place you've found me before, my love," he returned before his brush began moving again and Isa's lips ghosted his cheek.

"Did you know," she said between kisses. "That before Hope was born, you never used to smile while you painted."

His movements slowed but they didn't stop and Isa kept speaking.

"Not once. You were always so focused. After our children were born and we were reunited with Marcellus, it was like you remembered that painting can bring you joy, rather than just be an outlet for your emotions. You smile when you paint now."

Nik set his tools down before his arms wrapped around her waist and Isa laughed as he spun her to face him and his hand rested on her jaw as their lips met.

"I believe that it is your doing that I have many reasons to smile whilst I paint," he said with a smirk.

"I believe so," Isa said with a lazy grin and Nik simply returned his lips to hers as he lowered her into a dip, mimicking the silhouette of the couple he was etching onto his canvas amongst the bustling streets of the Quarter.

It seemed like Nik had just begun kissing her before he pulled away to the sound of a phone ringing.

"This is why I switch my phone off whilst I paint. Can't get anything done when it rings incessantly every five minutes," Nik said pointedly as Isa fished it out of her pocket and glared at him.

"Well it's your son calling me, so it's just as much your fault as it is mine," she said as she answered Torin's call. "Hi, Torin."

"Mom? Mom! There's a problem," he said and the tone of his voice had all the fuzzy feelings inside Isa turn to ice.

"What's wrong?"

"We're at Rousseu's. Some people walked in. Two men and a woman. She looks just like Aunt Kat, Mom."

Isa's eyes widened in horror as she met Nik's gaze, knowing he heard what was said.

"Torin, who is 'we'?"

"Me, Melody, Lydia and Cassian."

"Bloody hell!" Isa swore before taking a deep breath. "Torin, I want you to listen to me. Listen to me very carefully. Get out. Get out of there right now. The back door, the tunnels, I don't care, just get your sister and your cousins and get out. You understand me?"

"I understand, Mom."

"Your father and I are on our way. You stay far away from those people and you get the bloody hell out of there."

"I got it, Mom."

And the line went dead as Isa stared from her phone to her husband. "They can't turn. They're not vampires or in control of their magic. They're essentially human. Nik-"
