"Am I interrupting something?" Elijah asked with a smirk, hand in his pockets and blazer abandoned, as he walked into his and Katherine's shared bedroom to find the woman with her mouth on a man's neck.
Her gaze flicked up to him, face vamped and blood running down her face as she licked her lips.
"Just a little snack. I wanted to be in good shape for the rescue tomorrow seeing as we're going up against full-strength wolves," she said as she calmly pushed the man over, sending him falling to the floor as her face returned to normal and she looked up at Elijah who simply chuckled as he approached her.
"Katarina, I have no doubt that you could take on these wolves in your sleep. Not to mention that you are always in good shape," he said charmingly as his hand ran down her side as he leaned in to kiss her before his lips moved lower to lap up the blood that was still on her face. "Perfect shape, I would say," he smirked as he pulled back, tongue removing all traces of blood from the both of them.
"Hmmm, you have a way with words, My Lord," Katherine laughed, bringing back the British accent she'd adopted when they'd first met, earning a laugh in return.
Elijah seemed to have all the time in the world as he studied Katherine's face, tucking one of her curls behind her ear as she looked up at him.
It was this moment that felt timeless.
That felt as if they were the only two people in the world and he had all the time in the world to decipher the feelings behind the layers of chocolate in Katherine's eyes, to wonder how her sun-kissed skin felt as soft as silk, or if her lips were always this rosy.
And it was in this moment that he didn't even need to think as he took her hands in his and lowered his body to the floor, propping himself up on one knee as he heard Katherine's heart begin to race and her grip on his hands tighten.
"What are you doing?" she asked nervously, but her boyfriend only smiled at her.
"For over 500 years I held out on the hope that we'd be reunited again, no matter how absurd nor how minuscule that hope was. And despite the fact that I once loved someone with whom you share resemblance with, when I got to know you back in England, I fell in love with your mind. I fell in love with your heart. And I fell in love with your soul. A process that repeated itself in Pennsylvania. Katarina, I love you," Elijah said, her eyes beginning to tear up because she couldn't believe this was actually happening. "And I never wish to be parted from you. Not by some puny werewolves nor pesky witches and vampires. And I could go on and on about the many, many things that I love about you, but you'll hear it later depending on your answer to my next question."
Katherine chuckled as the tears dripped down her face and Elijah dropped her hands to pull a small velvet box from his pocket.
Katherine didn't even wait for him to ask the question.
She didn't even wait for him to open it.
She crashed to her knees as she pressed her lips to Elijah's in a heated kiss, their bodies impossibly close and the ring box still in Elijah's hand as Katherine's messed up his hair.
"I love your Mikaelson dramatics, but this is one matter that does not need it, because you can save it, and the no doubt pages of things you love about me for our vows, because I will willingly, happily and gladly spend the rest of my immortal life with you."
Elijah's hands were firm but soft as he pulled her into a kiss by the nape of her neck.
"And as much as I love your answer and reciprocate it whole-heartedly, I am nothing if not traditional. So, I'd actually like to ask my bride if she'd wish to be my bride."
Katherine laughed a hearty sound that Elijah wished he could remember forever as she stood up and tried to dry the moisture from her face, only to gasp as Elijah opened the ring box.
She'd told him back in England that she was a simple girl who'd wanted a simple ring, a plain gold band with a small circular diamond. That was the traditional style of rings back then, but being a commoner, a diamond, even the gold band, was asking for a lot. But not for the noble Lord Elijah.
However, that was several dozen lifetimes ago. And Katherine wasn't a simple girl anymore nor was Elijah a noble lord despite the way he conducted himself.
This ring was a representation of who she was now.
It was a big diamond. Flashy, to say the least.
A cushion cut, haloed diamond sat on a smooth thin band of smaller crystals, all of which were gorgeous as they sparkled in the afternoon sun.
It was a beautiful ring.
And Elijah had picked it out for her.
He'd actually bought it for her. With money. No compulsion at all.
He wanted it to be real, a proper proposal, every aspect of it.
And now he only had one thing left to do.
"Katarina Petrova, will you do me the honour of becoming my wife? Will you marry me?"
Katherine's smile was one of pure elation as she pressed her fingers to her lips before saying, "Yes, Elijah Mikaelson. I will marry you."
And Elijah's smile was bright as it reached his eyes and Katherine stretched her left hand forward as he gently plucked the ring out of the box and slid it onto her ring finger.
Now that it was sitting on her finger, it was the most beautiful ring in the world as she admired it.
"I take it that you like it," Elijah chuckled as he rose from the floor and Katherine pulled him into a hug.
"I love it. It's perfect," she said into his shoulder, holding his torso close as her eyes closed.
"I'm glad," he replied as his hand curled into her hair, inhaling the crisp apple scent.
Katherine's eyes then snapped open.
"I can't wait to tell Isa!"
"Wait, Katarina!" Elijah said urgently as he pulled her back by her hands.
"What is it?"
"As elated as I am about this, I don't think now is the right time to tell my brother and sister yet. They've only just gotten back to a good place after giving up Hope and with this rescue of the wolf children, I don't think it's best to tell them just yet."
"You're right. I guess I can't wear this yet," she pouted sadly as she stared at her ring.
Elijah only plastered a knowing smile on his face.
"I wouldn't be so sure about that. May I?"
"Well, I guess you put it on there so you can take it off."
He gave her a look as he slid the ring off her finger.
"Which I have every intention of returning," he said pointedly before pulling a long silver chain from his pocket and threading the ring onto it. "So you can keep it close until the time we can return it to your finger."
She gave him an impressed smile.
"You think of everything, don't you? Put it on me?"
She spun around as she lifted up her hair and Elijah draped the necklace around her neck, the ring falling to the middle of her chest, close to her heart as Elijah did up the clasp.
And when she smiled at him, clasping the necklace in her hand, the look in Elijah's eyes changed as he pulled Katherine flush with him.
"And now I plan to take off everything but that necklace."
