the sun woke me up bright and early as it shone through the blinds, into my eyes. i looked over to carl who was still asleep. he was softly snoring and the light left a golden glow across his cheeks.

his eyes fluttered open and in a raspy morning voice, he said 'good morning babe.'

his smile brought a smile to my own face 'good morning.' i looked around the room 'i want to stay here.' i told him.

'yeah?' he asked. i nodded. 'well why don't we? remember i said that us with judith felt like our own little family, it would be like that but without a kid.'

i laughed 'well, if i'm correct, you didn't use a condom last night so who knows.'

'yeah, well then lets hope it doesn't happen just yet.' he pushed a strand of hair behind my ear 'but i don't think it would be so bad if it did happen.'

i shrugged 'not now. do you remember what I said before?' he shook his head as i reminded him 'i'd only want kids if we stayed in alexandria where it was safer. this is far too dangerous here.'

he rolled me to be laying over him 'i guess you're right.' he leaned up to kiss me.

'when does your bandage need changing?' i asked as i stared at the gauze wrapped around his head.

'today actually. guess that means we should go o a run.' he got out of the bed, pulling on his clothes before i did the same 'there's a drug store not far, they'll probably have stuff if it's not cleared out.'

we left a few minutes later, after we were dressed. the place was crawling with walkers, both inside and out. but that also meant that probably no one had gone in for a while.

carl dragged me by the hand round the corner. 'it'll be safer if we just check in the back. barely any walkers will be there.'

'wait a second.' i pulled the piece of wood from the door that kept walkers inside, throwing rocks in the opposite direction. they followed the noise as i dragged carl inside where it was now practically empty.

he looked around the shelves for stuff to wrap his eye as i grabbed some stuff for myself, tampons and condoms. he found me down a random isle 'you ready to go?'

'yeah.' i followed him outside to where the hoard had gone off in a random direction and were now nowhere to be seen. we made our way back to the house 'i would die for a shower right now.'

'the water still works.' he told me 'it just won't go hot because there's no gas or electric.'

i frowned 'i miss alexandria.'

'i know baby. i miss it too.' he said as he wrapped his arms around my waist, hiding his face in my hair. 'you know we never did anything for your birthday?'

'yeah we did.' i laughed 'i'm counting last night as my birthday present.'

he joined in with my laughter 'as long as you enjoyed yesterday.'

we lounged around for the whole day. we made sure the doors were locked and kept quiet. we got into a conversation about what we missed most. 'you know what I miss?' I added 'nails. my mom only let me get my nails done a couple of times for events, you know wedding or whatever. but i think if the apocalypse ever happened, then i would be getting them dome every few weeks.'

'while there's so much i miss, i'm happy it happened.' he smiled.

'why?' he usually seemed to hate everything about this.

he shrugged 'i wouldn't have met you.' i smiled, looking down and hiding a blush '. he lifted my head 'please don't hide anything from me.' he pressed a kiss to my lips and a soft peck on my lips.

'you know i think we still would have known each other.' i added 'i was only a few neighbourhoods away, we might have gone to the same school.'

i told him the school i went to before everything shut and his jaw dropped 'me too. how the hell did i not recognise you?'

'well at least you know me now.'

'wait you lived nearby. can we go to see your house?' he asked. 'please.' he pouted.

i giggled and rolled my eyes 'fine.'

we left the house and got to mine without any trouble. it was exactly the same as when we left, just a lot dustier. the tv was in the centre of the wall, surrounded by shelves full of books and records and one shelf had a record player sat on it. my room was still had sage green with pictures all over the walls and a white electric guitar hung up in the corner.

as we went in, carls jaw dropped 'you lived in this room, when we were like 11.' i nodded 'this is sick.'

i laid down on the left side of the double bed against the window. he joined me, laying down beside me as he pulled himself closer to kiss me.

'i love you.' he whispered.

'i love you too.' i mumbled back against his lips.

'can you play me something? on you guitar.' i got off his lap and grabbed it, sitting on the stool from my vanity just beside it.

'what do you want?' i asked, tuning it.

he shrugged 'anything.'

i began to play stairway to heaven and singing along. he watched me in awe. as the song finished, he took the guitar from my hands, putting it back on the wall. he dragged me over to the bed and threw me on it, jumping over me.
