we cut through the fence with wire cutters, all slipping through the gap before who i had learned to be glenn used an old piece of wire to wrap the hole shut, keeping us safe.

as we made our way around the path to get to the gate, we made sure to stay away from the fences on either side and the rotting hands reaching through them, trying to grab us.

'it's prefect.' rick, panted, taking in the prison. 'if we can shut that gate,' he looked over to another gate on the other end of the yard 'prevent more from filling the yard, we can pick off these walkers. we'll take the field by tonight.' he explained his plan.

glenn offered to shut the gate 'i'll do it, you guys cover me.'

but he was shot down by maggie 'no, it's a suicide run.'

even after glenn had claimed he was the fasted which i couldn't judge yet, rick sided with maggie 'no. you, maggie and beth draw as many as you can over there, pop 'em through the fence.' he pointed off in a direction before giving everyone else things to do 'daryl,go back to the other tower. carol, you've become a pretty good shot, take your time, we don't have a lot of ammo to waste. hershel, you carl and taylor take this tower. i'll run for the gate.'

i followed hershel and a boy my age, carl who i learned was ricks son, up the stairs of the tower behind us. we stayed up there where it was safer, carl and hershel shooting at walkers below us, careful not to shoot rick who i watched run through them to the other gate. i didn't have a gun so i couldn't help and even if i did i would have been a crappy shot.

i gasped every time rick nearly got shot or a walker came for him as he ran up to the gate. luckily he kicked the walker back in, shutting and locking the gate to separate them. rick disappeared behind a door as the hoard surrounded him.

he appeared back at the top of the guard tower, shooting down the last walker in the yard. we all cheered as we all made our way back to the gate where lori stood with it open.

'we haven't had this much space since we left the farm 'carol said happily.

on the floor there was a legless walker still groaning at us. i held it down with my foot before sticking my knife into its head from the back, making my small contribution to clearing the prison.

it began to get dark. we had gotten all of our stuff out of the cars and were now sat around a fire that i taught carl how to make. my grandad took my camping a lot as a kid and i still remembered everything he taught me about survival, which probably helped the fact that i had made it this far.

carol, daryl, and rick were by the gates keeping watch while the rest of us sat around the fire. they were eating some sort of meat maggie was cooking for them as i sat between carl and t-dog reading a book i had taked from the cabin. there was a whole wall of book shelves and i grabbed a few on my way out. i laid on my stomach, nearly falling asleep whilst reading the 1984. who knows if it was suitable for a 13 year old but who would care, the world was going to shit, a whole lot worse than soviet takeover like the book was based off of.

they talked about what they were going to do for food and water. t-dog mentioned a canal under the fence while hershel talked about farming vegetables to eat.

'that's his 3rd time around.' hershel pointed out about rick. 'if there was any part of it compromised he'd have found it by now.'

beth took the conversation off of rick who still hadn't come over 'this'll be a good place to have the baby. safe.'

they all talked as my eyes got heavy and I laid my head down on my book. as i laid down, i turned my head towards carl, smiling up at him. he smiled back.

'bethy, sing paddy reilley for me. i dodn't think I've heard that, i think, since your mother was alive.' hershel requested.

'daddy, not that one, please.' maggie begged.

'how about the parting glass?' hershel asked for the song.

beth looked at him 'no one wants to hear.'

'why not?' glenn asked.

beth began singing and it was keeping me up. she was right at first, no one wanted to hear, but glenn just had to push it. dammit. i sat there, praying she would stop so i could just sleep. then maggie joined in. maggie wasn't too bad because i couldn't see her singing all the time from now on. but i knew that if beth sung once she wouldn't stop singing.

eventually they stopped and rick said that he would take watch, claiming we had a big day. 'look i know we're all exhausted. this was a great win but we gotta push just a little bit more. most of the walkers are dressed as guards or prisoners. looks like this place fell pretty early. it could mean the supplies may be intact. they'd have an infirmary, a commissary.'

'an armoury?' daryl asked.

'that would be outside the prison itself but not too far away. wardens office would have info on the location. weapons, food, medicine. this place could be a gold mine.'

'we're dangerously low on ammo.' hershel argued about going further into the prison. 'we'd run out before we make a dent.'

'that's why we have to go in there...hand to hand.' rick argued back. 'after all we've been through, we can handle it, i know it.' he looked to me and carl 'these assholes don't stand a chance.'

as rick walked off, i drifted off to sleep. before my whole body shut down for the night, i felt soft hands pull the blanket up me more to cover me and keep me warm. they came from my right and were kind of small so i knew it was carl. i smiled as my brain blacked out, letting me sleep.
