September, 1988

It was 4:23 p.m. when the plane finally landed. Catherine continued to look out the airplane window as she watched the plane approach the airport terminal. The flight had taken about an hour. It hadn't been long, but she couldn't wait to get out of the uncomfortable seat and get off the plane. So, when the plane stopped, Catherine quickly got up.

"Calm down, Cath. There are still a few minutes before we can leave." her sister Greta, who was sitting right next to her, told her.

Catherine sniffled and slumped back in her seat.

Within ten minutes, both sisters exited the plane, each with a pair of suitcases. As they exited through the arrivals gate, they looked around for a familiar face. Finally they found it. A tall man with brown, somewhat gray hair, blue eyes and a bit of a beard was trying to catch the girls' attention by waving his hand. The man was putting his arm around a short woman with black hair and eyes and tanned skin. She smiled as she watched the two girls approach towards them. The man stepped away from the woman's side and walked to greet the sisters. He wrapped his arms around them, hugging them tightly. They did as well.

"I'm so glad to see you." the man whispered.

" And we're glad to see you too, Dad," Greta replied, while Catherine only nodded.

The man stepped back from his daughters and watched them carefully. It was amazing how much they had changed in a year. They had gone from being his little girls to a pair of beautiful young ladies. Among the two, the one that surprised him the most was Catherine, who was almost sixteen years old. She was 5'10" tall and had a slim, athletic build. She had long, curly, red hair, just like his ex-wife. She also had some freckles on her face. The truth was that she was a carbon copy of her mother, except for her eyes, which were blue like his. Greta was also very pretty. At age seventeen, she was only slightly shorter than her sister and had a similar complexion. Her hair was the same color, but wavy and a little shorter. Her eyes were hazel. Greta definitely looked just like her mother.

"You both look beautiful." he said finally. They just smiled in response.

The woman accompanying her father approached them without taking the smile off her face. When the girls saw her, they approached her and gave her a little hug. It was Emily, their stepmother. At first, when their father told them he was marrying another woman, Catherine and her sister were not amused. They feared it would be something like Cinderella and her stepmother. But Emily turned out to be a really nice woman. She had no children, but she would have loved to have them, so she always tried to help Catherine and Greta as much as she could. Besides, after the messy divorce her parents had gone through, they both felt that their father deserved to be happy, even if it was with another woman. And although they were saddened when their father decided to leave New York to move to Kentucky with Emily, they respected his decision.

And now, they were the ones who had to leave their birth city to live with their father, because their mother... Well, their mother was going through a rough patch and wasn't able to take care of her daughters.

James ( that was his name) put his daughters' suitcases in the trunk of his car, started it up and they drove off to their new home.

"Have classes started here yet?" Greta asked.

"No, they start tomorrow. You're lucky, you'll be able to join the school from the beginning. It will be easier for you to adapt." said her father as he looked at the road.

"That doesn't matter. I'm sure they've all known each other for a long time. It's going to be difficult anyway."

Catherine had always been shy, and found it difficult to make friends for this reason. That was what scared her most about the change of home: having to make friends with people different from the ones she was used to.

"Hey Cath, I remember when I was in high school there was a drama club. I'm sure there still is. You should try out for it." Emily commented.

The truth was that one of Catherine's great passions was acting. It had been for as long as she could remember. It was the only situation in which she put aside her shyness.

"I'll think about it," was all Catherine said.

They finally arrived at the house. Greta and Catherine, who were used to the tall buildings of NYC, thought the house was pretty cool. They emptied their suitcases and placed their things in the room they both shared. They went downstairs for dinner and went to bed early, as there was a school day the next day. The two sisters put on their pajamas, went to bed and said goodnight to each other before turning out the light. It didn't take Greta long to fall asleep, but Catherine stayed up for a while scheming about how much change was coming over her. After a while, she also fell sound asleep.
