Catherine's alarm clock went off at 7:00 a.m., as usual. Catherine let out a grunt and reached up, trying to turn off the alarm. When she did it after several attempts, she got out of bed and headed for the bathroom, still half asleep. She stepped into the shower and took a cold shower. It was nicer to do it with hot water, but the cold water would help to totally wake her up. Then she came out of the bathroom with a towel wrapped around her body and her hair still damp. After spending several minutes rummaging through her closet, she finally decided to wear a black long-sleeved T-shirt, blue high-waisted jeans and black ankle boots. Then she dried her hair. There had been a time when she straightened it, but some time ago she had decided to leave it natural. Once ready, she headed for Lizzie's room. She opened the door and walked in the dark to the window. She pulled back the curtains, letting the sunlight into the room. Then she turned back to the bed where her daughter slept peacefully. She bent down and tenderly kissed her daughter's forehead.
"Good morning my love" she whispered as Lizzie began to wake up.
"Good morning mommy..." whispered Lizzie as she sat up in bed and rubbed her eyes.
Catherine walked over to her daughter's dresser. She chose a pink t-shirt, white leggings with fuchsia dots and pink shoes. Catherine thought it was very cute how snooty Lizzie was despite how young she was. After helping her daughter get dressed, they both headed for the bathroom.
"How do you want me to do your hair?" asked Catherine as she picked up the comb.
"Ummm.... I want braids..." then she pulled some pink rubber bands out of the drawer "Can you use these, please?"
"Sure!"
As she did her daughter's hair, Catherine took the opportunity to watch her. Lizzie (Elizabeth, but Catherine only called her that when she was angry with her.) was three years old, and quite tall for her age. At first glance she might have looked just like her mother. But if you looked at her more closely, the only thing they really looked alike was their hair (which was red and thick, though Lizzie's was a bit straighter) and the few freckles they both had around their noses. Otherwise, they were not so much alike; her lips were a little thinner than her mother's, the shape of her nose was not the same either, her eyebrows were a little thicker and her eyes... her eyes were green.
It was already 8:26 when Catherine and Lizzie arrived at the school. Once in front of the pavilion she gave her daughter a kiss on the forehead and wished her a good day, and watched her as she walked into the building along with a couple of her friends. There was also a group of mothers of girls in Lizzie's class. Catherine was perfectly aware that they were watching her, and perhaps even criticizing her, but she didn't care. The only time she had interacted with these women, they had bombarded her with comments and questions like "At first we thought you were Lizzie's older sister," "You look too young to be a mother," or "Where is the girl's father?"
So Catherine had made the decision to ignore them.
By 9:00 she was walking through the door of the filming studio. She went to her dressing room, where Greta and Valeria were already waiting for her. She changed into her usual clothing, put her hair up and put on her wig. Then she straightened up in her chair while Valeria applied her make-up.
"They brought in a new girl." commented Greta "I think she's going to play Helen Cameron."
Helen Cameron was a minor character in the movie. She was a girl the detective bribed to infiltrate herself in the cabaret and find out which of the women were murdering the customers. She discovers that Maria (Catherine's character) is the murderer, and when she goes to rat her out.... Maria stabs her and blames one of the most hated customers for the murder, for which he is arrested. What is often called "kill two birds with one stone."
"And what's she like?" asked Catherine with her eyes closed as Valeria applied eye shadow.
"We haven't talked to her, but she seems nice." replied Valeria.
Once ready, Catherine immediately headed to the set. She saw the director talking to a girl, and figured it would be her new co-worker. When the director saw her, he waved to her to come closer. Once there, she could see the girl more clearly. Like her, she was dressed in a 1920's style. She was quite a bit shorter than Catherine and maybe a bit older, but not too much. She had blonde hair and blue eyes. She also had a nice smile.
"Well, this is Catherine McNamara, she's the leading lady in the movie," the director introduced her. "Catherine, this is Leighanne Wallace. She's going to play Helen Cameron."
Both women smiled and nodded to each other. The director left them alone so that they could talk.
"Is this the first movie you've done?" asked Leighanne to break the silence.
"It's the first time I've starred in one, but I did another one a couple of years ago. Nothing important..." replied Catherine "And what about you?"
"Well... it's not the first, but I'm excited about it as if it was the first. In fact, I did the casting for this months ago, I guess just like you, and I didn't expect to get cast, but you see.... That's why my boyfriend and I have moved to LA for a while."
Just then, the director called the actors to the set to start shooting. Catherine went along as she thought about how nice she thought Leighanne was.
