"God dammit.'' Taking a deep breath, I try to regain my composure, I grab some makeup wipes and begin swiftly removing the uneven eyeliner, erasing any trace of the mishap. As I focus on fixing my makeup, the sound of the doorbell startles me, causing me to pause momentarily and gather my thoughts.
"HELLO??" Jason's voice radiates through the room which is followed by a knock on the door.
"I'm coming," I respond, hastily wiping away the remnants of the eyeliner. "Hey," I greet him, pulling him into a tight bear hug, burying my face near the nape of his neck that fills my senses with a woody scent.
"You're still not ready? When I called you to tell you that I'm leaving, you said you were ready," Jason remarks, his tone filled with impatience. He grabs hold of my shoulders, staring intently into my eyes, "Did someone punch you in the eye?" He adds.
"What? No. It's probably the liner. I messed it up.'' I reply and he nods in response. "Just give me 5 more minutes please,'' I add.
"Fine! Be quick.'' Jason sighs.
"It's freezing out here. Come on in," I urge Jason, holding his hand and pulling him inside before shutting the door behind us.
"Where's Liz and Samuel?'' I ask Jason as I pull up the zipper of my leather jacket.
"They'll meet us at the club. Samuel had to run some errands so...yeah.'' Jason responds.
"Cool. Shall we?'' I offer, extending my arm towards him. I bury my neck in my jacket to shield myself from the bitter weather. Jason looks at me and chuckles, making his silver lip ring glimmer under the street light, wrapping his arms around me.
As we make our way to the club, there is a comfortable silence between Jason and me. It's a familiar dynamic in our relationship- we don't talk about feelings. Like those serious heart-to-heart convos? Yeah, we don't do that and I am okay with that. Since my dad's passing, I've become somewhat guarded and distant. So yeah...
As Jason opens the club door my ears are greeted with ear-splitting music.
"Here!" Liz yells from across, resting on the barstools.
"I'll be right back," Jason whispers in my ear, his voice barely audible over the blaring music.
"Where are you-"
"Where's he going?" Liz interrupts. I turn to answer her, but Jason has already disappeared into the chaotic crowd.
"Let him be," Samuel interjects, downing his drink in a sluggish manner as I reluctantly settle onto the uncomfortable barstool.
"Fancy a drink?" Samuel asks, and I nod in response. He slides a glass towards me, carefully guiding my hands to prevent it from slipping away. After a couple of drinks, the pulsating blue lights and the beats of the club ignite a surge of energy within me. I spin around, and as I do, I catch sight of his hazel eyes drawing nearer and nearer.
"Where the hell were you?" I ask Jason.
"Uh...I was with Swae, he's in our football team.''
"What took you so long-
"Guys, let's hit the floor!" Liz interrupts, getting up from her stool and banging the empty glass on the bar countertop.
"But-
"Shall we?" Samuel yells excitedly, pointing towards the dance floor. Jason extends his hand towards me, silently urging me to hold it. We navigate through the warm, moving bodies on the dance floor, but just as we reach the middle, I feel my cell phone vibrating in my pocket. I glance at it, and my mom's name appears on the screen.
"JASON,'' I yell through the loud music. "I gotta take this call,'' I add.
"C'mon-
"I'll be right back,'' I tell him, leaving the noisy crowd heading out of the club.
"Hello, mum?'' I say..
"I need you to come to the Metropolitan Hospital right now,'' Mum says anxiously.
"What? Are you alright?"
"I'm alright. Noah fractured his leg during his football match today.''
"God dammit. I'll be there.'' I tell her and hang up.
"Whatcha...hic...Whatcha doing out Before he finishes his sentence in that groggy tone of his, Jason stumbles across the fire hydrant and plunges into my arms. His alcohol tolerance is exacerbating. I hold onto him firmly with one arm and pull out my phone from the other and dial-up Samuel.
"Can you come out for a sec?"
"What is it?'' Samuel's voice diffuses with the blasting music from the club.
"Jason passed out,'' I yell into the phone.
"What? Oh shit,'' He replies and hangs up. After a minute both Liz and Samuel barge out of the club.
"What-" Before Samuel finishes his sentence...the sight of me uncomfortably holding Jason catches his eye.
"Holy shit.'' Samuel puts Jason's arm around his shoulder.
"Okay...so...my brother, he fractured his leg so I am needed at the hospital," I explain quickly as I try to maintain my composure despite feeling a bit drunk.
"C'mon! Don't ditch us.'' Samuel replies groggily.
"I'm really sorry, but it's urgent. Thank you so much," I say, rushing off from the scene, and booking myself a cab.
