Spencer
I thank the red-headed girl wearing night-cloaked clothes who caught my attention with her uniquely styled attire. She possessed a nocturnal aura, and her sharp facial features made her appearance distinctive. There's something about her that sets her apart from the rest. Her eyes possess a gentle yet fierce force, and the piercings adorning her face add an intimidating touch to her gorgeous look.
The professor begins his lecture, capturing our attention as he discusses the upcoming exams and provides an overview of the chapter he's going to teach. After the class, I feel the need for a caffeine boost, so I purchase a cold coffee can from the nearby vending machine. I leisurely stroll around the campus absorbing the new environment and ring Ryan, a childhood friend I went to school with to see if he's available to hang out.
"Hey, Spence. Welcome to New York. How are you? Sorry, I couldn't call sooner because I had a test this morning." Ryan says.
"Hi. I'm doing amazing. It's totally all right. How'd your test go?''
"Wait...today's your first day? Isn't it?"
"Yeah.''
"Shit! I totally forgot. Where are you right now?''
"I'm at this really cool library-
"Cool. Be there in 10.''
In the meantime, I take a look around the enormous bookshelf in the library and a sweet, musky smell wafts into my nostrils. My eyes wander across the array of titles, and I'm drawn to a particular book that catches my attention: "The Universe in a Nutshell" by Stephen Hawking. I pull it out from the shelf and flip through its pages, immersing myself in the world of astrophysics. Within the book's pages, I come across a mind-boggling fact about the observable Universe. It stretches an unimaginable 93 billion light years in diameter, a vast expanse that dwarfs our existence. Contemplating this cosmic scale, I can't help but feel a sense of awe and insignificance. How fragile and small we are in comparison to something so vast and complicated. Yet we have an intrinsic kinship with the trillions of celestial objects that exist, whether we believe it or not.
"Spence?" I feel a light tap on my back and when I turn around I notice Ryan who has apparently changed a lot since I last met him, 5 years ago at his sister's wedding.
"Hey! Long time.'' Ryan exclaims, extending his hand for a vigorous handshake.
"Five years, huh? It feels like just yesterday we were celebrating your sister's wedding" I reply.
"Damn, it has been that long? Time indeed flies. Anyways, how do you like the campus?" He says.
"It's lovely, especially this library...it's simply enchanting.''
"How's Mr and Mrs McKeller ?"
"Well...my parents...got divorced last year. A lot has happened.'' I say.
"Omg, I'm so sorry. I had no idea.''
"It's all right. These things happen. Mom was having an affair with Dad's bodyguard.'' The words hang in the air, and as I utter them, the weight of the situation finally starts to sink in. It dawns on me that so much has happened, and I haven't had the chance to fully process any of it.
"WHAT?'' Ryan yells.
"Shh.''
"What? That's a lot to take in Spencer."
"Yeah. So, last year, Dad came back to New York and started working on expanding the business here.''
"That is crazy. I'm here for you bro. If you need any help to settle in.'' He replies and I give him a grateful smile in return.
