Ivy
The entire day goes by in the blink of an eye. I met up with Jason at the café, and before I knew, I found myself back at the dorm with tons of assignments to tackle.
Exhausted, I collapsed onto my bed around 1:00 am, my legs hanging over the edge. Sinking into the comfort of my bed, I quickly succumb to sleep.
The blaring music emanating from the neighbouring dorm jolts me awake in the morning. Sitting upright, I gather my senses, fully alert. Before rising from the bed, I reach for my phone and dial my mom's number to inquire about Noah's condition.
"Hello, Mum. Is everything all right? How is Noah feeling?" I ask.
"Yeah. Everything's fine. Noah's better now. He was really tired so he dozed off early yesterday.'' She replies.
"Okay. It must be really tiring for you too. I'll drop by today after my classes."
"Don't worry about it, sweetie. It's all good.''
"I'm coming okay? End of discussion.''
"Okay, sweetheart.''
"I gotta go now. I have to take a shower. Bye, take care.'' I say.
"Okay then bye.''
I remember my dad always telling me that taking a shower not only cleanses our physical bodies but also helps wash away the negative energy within us. He would encourage me to envision the water's power, visualizing it as it cascades over my body, carrying away any anger, regret, or sadness, and whisking them down the drain. It may sound cliché, but this practice has genuinely helped me cope with numerous hardships in life. I miss him.
I twist the shower knob to turn off the water, then proceed to tie my hair up into a bun and quickly get dressed. With plenty of time before my class, I decide to stop by the café to grab a bite. As I enter, I immediately notice a lengthy queue forming near the counter. However, my attention is drawn to the British guy from class, seated by the glass wall through which sunlight streamed in, casting a warm glow on his chocolate-coloured hair. He sips on what appears to be cranberry juice while his table is scattered with books.
"Enjoying the view?" he asks, noticing my gaze fixed on him.
"Don't flatter yourself, Daniel. I was just checking out the menu behind you," I retort, rolling my eyes playfully.
"It's Spencer," he responds with a hint of arrogance and I roll my eyes.
As I wait in line, I pass the time by scrolling through my phone. After making my purchase—a tofu sandwich and an iced americano—I turn around to find all the seats occupied, except for the one next to Spencer.
"You wanna sit here?" He offers.
"No, thanks," I reply flatly, avoiding eye contact.
"Suit yourself," he responds casually.
"Ugh... screw it," I mutter to myself. "It's just a seat, Ivy. Come on!" I walk over to his table, letting my bag drop onto the wooden surface with a thud, and plop myself down on the chair. Spencer glances up from his juice, raising an eyebrow.
"What?" I say defensively. "It's just a seat."
"I didn't say anything," he shrugs.
"Whatever," I roll my eyes.
"I see... you've also enrolled for astrophysics," he remarks, pointing at the book peeking out from my tote bag.
"Yes, I have. You too?" I respond curtly.
"Yes. Although you might have remembered if you weren't busy dozing off in class yesterday," he retorts. "Quick question... why did you choose to study astrophysics?"
"I don't know. I mean, no one has ever asked me that before. But think about it, despite all our advancements, there's still so much out there that remains extraordinary and unknown. And we're so small in comparison to the vastness of the universe. Yet, all we do is pine over minor inconveniences. It's just mind-boggling, isn't it? Uh... you probably don't understand any of this, do you?" I say, trailing off uncertainly.
"No, no. I do... I do get it. More than anyone," Spencer replies, gazing at me with a soft smile, his chin resting on his palm.
"Enough about me. Why did you enrol for astrophysics?" I ask, genuinely curious.
"Well, my answer might seem kind of basic, but that vast expanse of the great blue yonder up there is my utopia," Spencer replies with a hint of enthusiasm.
"Wow, that's—"
"Cheesy?" he interrupts, anticipating my response.
"Not at all. I'm just at a loss for words. What you said was... exceptional,"
His energy is undeniably distinct and unlike anyone I've encountered before. But wait, snap back to reality, Ivy. YOU HAVE A BOYFRIEND!!
