[Chapter Twenty-One]

The sounds of my fingers gliding across the keyboard filled the otherwise silent air. I moved away from the table, pushing against the surface as I slid back in my chair, turning as I caught myself on the counter by my 3-D printer. I opened the door and took the project from inside before scooting back to my desk.

"It's a little late to be tinkering, don't you think?"

My shoulders tensed at the voice. I lifted my head, my eyes flashing to the corner of my screen. 2:43 AM. I felt my chest tighten.

"It's a little late to be lurking around, don't you think?"

His chuckle filled the air. I turned when I heard his feet hit the ground. He must have been perched up on one of the metal rafters. I stood up, using the edge of my desk as leverage.

A grin spread across his lips, golden eyes seeming to glow in the dim lighting of my lab. Hawks shifted his wings around, rolling his shoulders as he walked around. I held the edge of the table tightly.

"Why are you here, Hawks?" I asked.

"You know why I'm here," He said, twisting a feather around in his hand. "I know you've seen the report."

I swallowed the lump forming in my throat. "I refuse to have any part in that."

"You're a hero now, remember?" He said, flicking his eyes to me. "Which means it's your duty to protect civilians."

"What good would it do to the civilians by stripping Kimina's quirk?" I frowned. "She doesn't use it like some other people would. Kimina is capable of so much more, but she holds back. She had never intentionally harmed someone."

"That you know of."

My eyebrows furrowed together. "What are you talking about?"

"There are files that even you aren't able to get into," He said, rolling the feather over his knuckles. "Files that hold the mangled corpses that have fallen to Kimina Rin."

"What the fuck are you talking about?" I snapped. "There was never a report of a death caused by her quirk!"

When the room illuminated further from my screen lighting up, I turned my head. But I wish I hadn't. How Hawks had gotten access to even project this image was beyond me. I wasn't focused on that.

There was a man laying on the concrete, facing upward. His eyes were rolled to the back of his head, his brown irises just barely visible from his white scleras. Blood trickled down from his waterline, dripping over his cheeks and from the corners of his eyes. Thick streams of it poured from his nose and his lips, coating them in a thick crimson paste. It dripped from his ears, all of it falling to pool under his head.
