[Chapter Twenty-Nine]

I rested my chin in my palm as I scrolled through the endless screen of numbers arranged in certain sets of coding. When I spotted a number out of place, I corrected it before moving on. I'd done this for the past hour and a half. It was boring, but it needed to be done. There were just a few more I needed to fix until I.V.A.N was operational again.

A knock came from the cracked door in my lab. I turned my head without taking my gaze away from the screen, calling for whoever it was to come in. I continued to fix the numbers, my fingers hovering over the keyboard.

"What's up?" I asked.

"I wanted to apologize, but something tells me I should come back another time,"

I quickly looked to the side, spotting Hawks standing across the room near the door. I looked back at my screen, muttering for him to give me a minute. Once I reached the end of the coding, I paused everything else and turned in my chair.

"What're you doing here?" I frowned.

Hawks' hands were secured in his jacket pockets. He wasn't wearing his hero uniform, making me think that he had come here during his time off. He wasn't walking any further into the room either. He stayed by the door.

"I came to apologize to you, L/n-chan," He said, bowing his head to me. "My behavior toward you has been completely unacceptable. I let my emotions get the better of me and I let them cloud my judgement. I'm very sorry. I hope you can forgive me."

My shoulders slumped. "It's...It's alright, Hawks. Don't worry about it, alright?"

He lifted his head, his eyebrows laced together. "It wasn't right."

"No, it wasn't," I agreed. "But it was in the past. I know that you and Kimina have a history. I won't hold it against you if you don't do it again."

He adjusted his shoulders, his feathers ruffling as he did so. "She told you, then?"

I beckoned him in, telling him to close the door. He did so, approaching my desk after. He sat on the edge, tucking his wings behind him to keep them out of the way. He glanced at my screen.

"She didn't go into a lot of detail, but I know," I replied. "You and she were friends. She went rogue. You've got orders to kill her. You didn't want to do it, so you convinced the Commission to veto her execution and replace it with having her quirk stripped instead."

He lifted a hand to the back of his neck, his eyes closing as he smiled sheepishly. "You caught me."

"You're a double agent," I mumbled. "So why not just lie to the Commission if you don't want her caught?"
