Nicole's POV

Kristen sleeps now, her mouth still wrapped around Nicole's breast. Her breathing had calmed and deepened, she stopped shaking, she was at first making pained noises and lurching in her sleep but now three hours later she was finally still.

Nicole wonders if the reason Kristen is always so upset with being woken up is because she has to come back to reality in her broken body.

They never talked too deeply about her Crohn's Disease, Kristen just said that caused her a complicated relationship with food and the pain was worse than the worst period cramps in the world.

Kristen seemed to be down playing her symptoms. When Nicole had her hand on her tummy it felt as if she could feel her intestines at the forefront of her flesh, inflamed and angry. Then being unable to control her bladder when she threw up? Kris was so embarrassed she completely shut down on Nicole. She was just lucky Kristen allowed Nicole to clean her up, if she hadn't been there, how would Kristen have the strength to clean herself up? Would she have sat in her sickness on the floor if Nicole hadn't been there to hold her up?

Nicole felt terrible about the fact Kristen's apartment was so small it was almost unlivable. It was clear the building hadn't been updated at all since it was originally built in the eighties if Nicole was guessing off the style of brick. Brighton Park didn't get the fancy updates that downtown Chicago got. What was worse when the groceries arrived she had even seen a small mouse run from the oven to under the fridge.

Kristen couldn't stay here anymore and that was final.

If Kristen fought her on this it was going to be the first and biggest fight they'll ever have. Nicole's family owned so many different apartment buildings, there would be one free for Kristen and she could be closer to work, (and Nicole).

Nicole knew that Kristen was a strong and capable woman who had been dealing with her illness since she was only 19, but only diagnosed when she was 22 and started treatment. Still she has bad days like this. It suddenly felt irresponsible to have her little living thirty minute car ride away, especially when she had a damn mouse hanging out in her kitchen.

It wasn't that her apartment was dirty, in fact it was ridiculously clean. Which told Nicole there had to be an infestation in the apartment building as a whole and there were holes in the floor and walls big enough for the mice to fit through to come and go as they pleased.

Nicole wasn't really squeamish about mice and rats; she had been living in the city of chicago and taking the red line since birth. But she knew if Kristen saw one she would absolutely lose her mind. This was a girl who saw shadows and would completely freeze in fear.

Nicole continued to watch her little sleep, a little drool falling from her open mouth. Nicole wondered if she moved if she would wake her, Kristen was always a deep sleeper but she's barely moved since the pained jerking stopped.

When the brunette's phone starts buzzing as smoothly as she can she pulls her phone from her side pocket without moving the sleeping Little in her arms.

MADRE: I like her

NICOLE: Who?

MADRE: Your girlfriend

A smile comes across Nicole's face, she hadn't expected to hear from her mom so soon. Most of the time since Nicole had become an adult her mother would simply ghost her for a week or two. Then whenever she was ready to have a daughter again she would reach out. But she would never apologize or acknowledge whatever it was she had ditched her daughter about. Which is why Nicole was fine with being ghosted, she knew her mother was emotionally immature and someone who couldn't see themselves as the problem. Nicole spent her entire childhood trying to soothe her mother when it was Iris that was hurting about the fact Nicole was closer to her hired staff than her parents. She would try to make her feel included in her life, then Iris would fail to show up for her. So now at this older adult age Nicole doesn't need her mother, if Iris wanted a close relationship with her daughter she would have done so by now, she would have put in the effort it takes.
