Since my trading route is quite extensive, as I mentioned earlier, it typically takes approximately six months for me to return to Goldkorb. As I relaxed on my carriage, contemplating what gift to bring for Sofia on my next visit, I reviewed my planned trade route once more. The basic routine I follow involves purchasing various goods in Goldkorb, selling a portion of them in the next city, acquiring locally produced goods there, moving on to another city or village, selling and buying anew, and repeating this process until I eventually make my way back to Goldkorb.
This is where the benefits of being a member of the merchant guild become evident. Merchants always study the latest prices and supplies in different regions, relying on the information provided by the guild before embarking on their journeys. However, I suspect that the price tidings obtained in certain cities may be outdated, as it is challenging to transmit information quickly by horseback. There have been rumors of dwarven artisans in the kingdom of dwarves diligently crafting tools that could enable the swift transmission of tidings. Yet, as of now, no further updates have reached our ears. As a merchant, I would certainly be interested in having access to such a tool, but I can anticipate that other merchants feel the same way. If such a tool were to exist, the competition among us would undoubtedly intensify.
One of the cities I visited is a bustling harbor, where a variety of sea products are available that are crucial for our livelihood. These include sought-after commodities like salt and exotic spices brought from distant lands. I had a thought of bringing fresh fish to Goldkorb and having the Master prepare a delightful dish from it. However, preserving the freshness of fish during long journeys poses quite a challenge. Legends speak of a wealthy merchant who once sought the aid of an elemental mage to freeze the fish and transport them to distant cities. Alas, his efforts resulted in significant losses, for the people of inland cities were unaccustomed to the scent and taste of seafood. Moreover, the exorbitant cost of hiring an elemental mage proved far from economical. As Sofia's birthday approaches, I contemplate purchasing fine garments and jewelry befitting a young lady. After all, she is blossoming into a remarkable one.
Of course, I always make it a point to spend time in my home village. My mother, now in her 45, still able to work on the Lord's fields, but I asked my brother to take over the duty, so she won't be burdened too much. But she would never let herself be still without any work, and still find a way to helping the neighbors. Since I was born in this village, I introduce myself to the lord that rule this land, and managed to establish a unique connection with the Lord himself as a specialized purchaser of certain goods required by his household. This has proven to be quite lucrative for me.
As for my first younger brother, he harbors a fervent aspiration to become a knight, while my second younger brother, inspired by my own path, dreams of following in my footsteps as a merchant. We made a pact among ourselves, vowing to protect and care for our beloved mother. In return, I wholeheartedly support their ambitions and offer guidance on their respective journeys.
My first brother is currently undergoing rigorous training in preparation for an assessment in the royal capital next year. His ultimate goal is to be deemed worthy of knighthood. As for my second brother, I've taken it upon myself to teach him the art of trade, encouraging him to start as a peddler and gain valuable experience.
While we contemplate the well-being of our mother, knowing that someday we may all depart from this place, we have yet to find a satisfactory solution. For now, we choose to postpone addressing this matter, hoping that fate will guide us to the answers we seek.
