After freshening up at the public bath, we decided to visit nearby temples to request a "cleansing spell" to be cast on her to prevent unwanted pregnancies. We proceeded to a public eatery for a simple breakfast. As we settled in for our meal, she turned to me and inquired,
"Percival, what do you have in mind for the rest of the day?"
"Until what time is my session with you will end?" I asked her for confirmation.
"Considering the time you reserved for me yesterday, we still have a considerable amount of time left. Would you like to engage in another session on the bed? We could go for several more rounds if you're up for it," she teased with a playful smile, awaiting my response.
I chuckled softly, appreciating the invitation, but declined, saying, "As alluring as that sounds, let's refrain from indulging again for now."
"Aww, what a pity," Serafina replied, a tinge of genuine disappointment in her voice that made me question whether she was acting or not.
"Instead, let's go somewhere you like. As you may know, I'm not really familiar with what this city has to offer. I believe you're more familiar, Serafina?"
"I shall do my utmost to provide you with delightful company, Sir," she replied in a courteous yet gentle manner, reminiscent of her demeanor at the store. A subtle, playful smile graced her lips. With her hand resting atop mine, we embarked on a city exploration, akin to curious foreign visitors. Her excitement was palpable as she enthusiastically detailed various landmarks, public spaces, parks, eateries, and more.
A twinge of guilt swept over me as I realized that I seemed to have momentarily lost sight of my primary task. I had neglected to submit my report to the corps last night. An uneasy thought surfaced—had the shadow guard assigned to me been observing my every move, even during my visit to Serafina's abode? And even during our intimate session? The prospect was mortifying! I could already envision Miss Dawnheart, the Artemis Corps leader, casting a disapproving gaze my way for my apparent extravagance, indulging in courtesan company with government funds.
"Percival? You appear a bit concerned. Is everything alright?"
"Yes, it's nothing major. Just a matter I remembered that I need to attend, but I'll handle it later. I apologize for letting it distract me from our time together."
She giggled playfully, "No need to fret. Let's move on to our next destination."
And so, we continued with our day. Being in her company was truly enjoyable. It struck me that I was treading a path reminiscent of the mistakes I had made with Bella last week. However, this time, I was acutely aware of my actions. I was prepared.
Joyful moments always seem to slip away quickly. I savored every expression that Serafina shared with me – her gestures, her words, every shared laugh. As our session's end drew near, we found ourselves in a tranquil park, shaded and peaceful. It was as though the surroundings had set the stage for us, creating a solemn atmosphere, as if preparing for the final act of our shared tales.
"We won't be able to meet again after this, will we?" she began, her tone carrying a hint of melancholy. She walked several steps ahead of me.
"Yes, that's true," I replied, my intention clear.
With a partial turn, she faced me, "I meant what I said last night, you know?"
"I know. That's why I'm going to respond with sincerity," I took a deep breath to steady myself.
"Did you enjoy your time being with me?" she asked.
"Yes, I believe I did."
"Then, I guess I have fulfilled my obligation, right?"
"You have gone above and beyond what I deserved."
"But you won't be seeing me anymore."
"That's correct. I'm uncertain how long my search will take, but once I've fulfilled that duty, there will be no more Percival Blackthorn."
She walked closer to me, stopping with her eyes locked onto mine, a gaze of a woman, not a courtesan.
"I understand. So, this is goodbye, then?" Her voice trembled.
"Yes, Serafina. It's truly been a pleasure spending time with you, even if only for a day."
She opened her arms and embraced me, burying her face in my chest. I couldn't be certain if tears were shed, but her sorrow was palpable. The weight of my decision hung heavily between us, and she understood that it was an inevitable outcome.
"I always knew I shouldn't let my feelings become entangled with my patrons, especially during my work," she said softly, her words tinged with regret. "I can't believe I let that slip my mind when I was with you."
I returned her embrace gently, holding her close. Her minty fragrance and the comforting warmth of her body melded with mine.
"You must not fall for a fake man like me, Serafina."
"But I already did, and I can't help it."
"You will be hurt, you know."
"I know already. That's why, let me put a curse on you, Percival."
She leaned in close, her lips almost touching my ear, and spoke in a hushed voice only I could hear. Her words were unexpected and left me quite astonished.
...
With her message delivered, she pulled her face back to meet mine again.
"Now you won't be able to forget about me, will you?" Her mischievous smile was evident in contrast with her sad gaze to me.
"That was quite a potent curse you cast," I admitted.
"Yet, even after casting it, it seems like you're not affected," she said with a playful pout.
"Not true. Your curse has definitely left its mark. It's just that I still have a mission to fulfill. I can't forgive myself if I don't complete it, especially after involving you. And I won't offer an apology either."
"I know. You're not in fault, Percival. It's just my own selfishness," she smiled while saying that.
We allowed the afternoon breeze to caress our cheeks, her silky hair dancing in the wind.
"I suppose the time has come," I said, embracing her firmly once again. "Farewell, Serafina. I consider myself truly fortunate to have crossed paths with you."
"Likewise, Percival. Your kindness will forever remain in my heart," her words quivered as she fought back tears, trying her best to hold them at bay.
As our gazes locked onto each other, words seemed to fall short. We sealed our meeting, our shared time, and our impending departure with a lingering kiss. No more words were needed; we both understood that our paths were diverging. Though we wouldn't see each other again, I hoped there would be no room for regrets. And even if regrets found their way in, I was certain I wouldn't mind, for I knew that I'd never be able to forget her regardless.
